ST PATRICKS DAY IN CABO ROIG has become something of an institution over recent years, and this weekend´s celebrations promise to be the biggest and greenest yet.
The small Orihuela Costa port town might not be the first location that springs to mind when thinking about Ireland’s most revered cultural and religious celebration, but for successive years Cabo Roig has hosted the largest St Patricks Day parade in mainland Europe.
The locale has a rich history and deep connection with many expatriate Irish people who came to settle on the Orihuela Costa’s sunnier shores, and this year’s event is expected to attract more than 10,000 residents and visitors to the area.
The famous Cabo Roig Strip, a line of bars, clubs, cafes and restaurants that form a roadside promenade adjacent to the main N-332 coast road, will be turned in to a Mediterranean Sea of green Irish pride for the special day.
Traditionally a Christian feast day, St Patricks Day has become an iconic institution, representing a special time for Irish people the world over to celebrate their nationality and the cultural heritage of the Emerald Isle in an unapologetically unrestrained manner.
Cabo Roig: St Patricks Day celebrations for 2019
This year’s parade will be the 9th annual event held in Cabo Roig and the organisers are promising that this year’s parade will be bigger and more spectacular than ever, with over 1000 people participating, and more activities, dancers and live music to keep the party going.
The Grand Marshall for this year´s celebrations is world famous amateur heavyweight boxer turned film star, Big Joe Egan.
The colourful Dubliner is a former Golden Gloves champion with an illustrious career that includes fights against eventual World Champions of the calibre of greats like Lewis, Collins and Seldon.
Once described by Mike Tyson as “the toughest white man on the planet” and more recently known for his US movie roles such as “Big Joe” in the 2009 Hollywood franchise “Sherlock Holmes”, where he co-starred alongside Robert Downey Jr, Jude Law, and Stephen Fry.
This year´s St Patricks Day celebrations start with an all-day craft market at the Cabo Roig medical centre, with face painting between 1:00 pm and 4:00 pm, and the Royal British Legion Band taking to the stage at 1.15 pm.
The St Patricks Day Parade: the most spectacular celebrations ever
The main feature of the day, the spectacular parade, starts at 3:00 pm with live music from 4:00 pm until late.
There will also be a chance to take part in some close-up magic in person, as magician Graeme Mykal moves through the crowd showcasing his artistic cardistry and hypnotic sleight-of-hand.
To end the celebrations, a breathtaking fireworks display will start at 9:00 pm at the back of the famous Cabo Roig Strip.
We are reliably informed that the consumption of alcohol might just possibly be involved too. All we know for sure is, it´ll be grand.
The St Patricks Day celebrations and parade take place this Sunday 17th March 2019 in Cabo Roig. Find out more about this local event from the official Orihuela Tourist Information website by clicking here, or find our favourite recommended things to do on the Orihuela Costa during this summer 2019.
