THE ARENA 1000 ORIHUELA COSTA beach handball tournament returns to La Zenia’s Playa de Cala Bosque beach next weekend, one of the first major sporting events of the 2019 summer season that will see more than a thousand Spanish and international athletes gather on the beach to participate in one of Europe´s most important handball contests.
Part of the European Beach Handball Tour organised by the European Handball Federation, the Arena 1000 Orihuela Costa tournament is preceded by ongoing events this weekend in Beue, a municipality in Galicia in the northeastern region of Spain.
The prestigious beach handball tournament takes place in locations throughout the continent, with both male and female athletes competing in the three different skill groups: senior, youth and cadet.
According to the councillor who launched the event earlier this week, Víctor Valverde, “This tournament is of major importance at the national level and is held in our region for the second year in a row which demonstrates the ability of Orihuela to organise events of great relevance”.
“It places us on the national map for something positive and healthy, like a municipality that bets on sports. Beach handball is great fun, and I invite everyone to attend the championship because you will have a great time”.
The top ranking Spanish national teams will be hoping for a considerable win in La Zenia next weekend to increase their chances of landing the coveted trophy.
Last year´s event attracted a large audience both locally and online, where Teledeporte reached 200,000 viewers through live streaming the event over 20 hours during the La Zenia beach competition, with over a million interactions on social networks.
This year the competition will be broadcast live via the Teledeporte TV channel, and the number of attendees and viewers are expected to increase over the same period last year.
The Europe-wide circuit encompasses more than 60 international teams, and the tour attracts corporate sponsorship from large commercial enterprises, including the Spanish national mail carrier Correos, banking group Grupo Santander, Avis car rental, and Spain’s Iberdrola power and utilities company.

The competition has picked up local sponsorship this year, including the local University Hospital of Torrevieja.
The Deputy Director of Hospital Management, José David Zafrilla, stated that “the hospital aims to promote a healthy lifestyle through involvement in sports, and we must be grateful that we can to do it collaborating in an event of this importance and magnitude”.
The Arena 1000 Orihuela Costa tournament is being organised by Spain’s Real Federación Española de Balonmano, the national association that manages and promotes the sport throughout the country.
Eight handball courts will be installed on Playa de Cala Bosque in La Zenia during the forthcoming week, with the competition commencing on Friday 5th July at 10:00 am. The second circuit round will take place on Saturday, with the final local stage on Sunday from 10:00 am until 2:30 pm.
The Arena 1000 competition moves on to Cádiz, followed by successive matches in Valencia, before returning to Playa de San Juan in Alicante for the finals during the weekend of 1st to 4th August 2019.
Hundreds of residents and tourists alike are expected to attend the tournament to enjoy the sporting spectacle and to support the native Spanish handball teams.
The event is free of charge to attend, and grandstand seating is provided. For more information about the Arena 1000 Orihuela tournament, please visit the official website.
