But each beach offers different benefits: some are small and relatively quiet, whilst other beaches are busy, active, and full of life. The latter is certainly true for Playa Cala La Caleta on the easternmost coastal fringes of Cabo Roig.

One of the most popular beaches in the South Costa Blanca, Cala La Caleta beach in Cabo Roig offers a crescent of fine white sand and safe, clean Mediterranean waters that captivate domestic and international tourists.

The beach measures 387 metres at the waterline with 16.641 m2 of soft sand. An imposing, ornate stone cliff wall stands behind the beach with villas overlooking the sea below, and a network of pathways links to the coastal promenade and slopes down toward the beach, providing access on foot.

It's an incredibly popular beach in the summer, and leisure craft, motor yachts, and cruisers regularly moor in the azure waters, with tenders ferrying passengers ashore. The sea remains reassuringly shallow close to the waterline, and the beach is suited to use by families, children, and adults of any age and swimming capability.

Unlike many other beaches on the Orihuela Costa, Cala La Caleta is active year-round, and the local town hall offers complementary activities in the spring and autumn months to make the most of the beautiful winter sunshine.

Orihuela Costa's Winter Beach programme includes free paddleboard sessions, kayaking, diving lessons, and group activities on the beach such as yoga and Zumba, that promote a healthy lifestyle amongst the local community, and events regularly fill the beach during weekends.

A small car park on Calle Levante in Cabo Roig offers free parking and access to the beach via a sloping walkway, ideal for persons of limited mobility. An additional car park at the end of Calle de la Ensenada offers more free parking, with access to the beach via a set of steps.

Playa Cala La Caleta is one of the best beaches in Orihuela Costa and probably ranks among the finest beaches you're likely to find here in the South Costa Blanca. Residents and visitors are preparing for a weekend of celebration and fun, great food and drink, spectacular music and entertainment, and a St Patrick's Day show that promises to be the biggest and best.

The committee members have been working tirelessly over the last few months to organise this year's parade, an award-winning event accredited by Radio Orihuela as the best-organised festival in the Vega Baja.

The parade is a testament to the hard work, fundraising, and generous contributions from local businesses and associations. This year's hotly anticipated St Patrick's Day Parade will take place in Cabo Roig on Sunday 15th March 2026, with all the fun starting at 15:00.

The Cabo Roig St Patrick's Day parade is mainland Europe's largest St Patrick's Day celebration. People typically travel from Ireland and all corners of the world to attend the Irish event, and previous parades have attracted tens of thousands of partygoers.

According to parade organisers “Peter brings true Irish spirit, pride, and craic to one of Europe's biggest St. Patrick's celebrations. A dedicated public representative with deep Galway roots, he's the perfect person to lead our green parade down the iconic Cabo Roig Strip.”

The parade is expected to be the most colourful yet, with troupes including ex-Irish Army Veterans' Pipe Band, marching bands, drummers, stilt walkers, colourful dancers dressed in glamorous and elaborate costumes, and floats constructed by local businesses.

The family-friendly event will offer entertainment for children, live music all day (and long into the evening), and bars and restaurants along the strip will feature a selection of special menus and, of course … Guinness!

The Spanish annual festivities are typically elaborate, celebrating Saint Patrick's Day in a unique and inimitable fashion that is both wildly patriotic and imaginatively eccentric.

We've compiled the latest data from the leading weather websites to bring you an overview of what you can expect if you're living in Cabo Roig, or planning a visit to this part of Spain in the new year.

Typically, January is the coldest winter month on the Orihuela Costa – both December and February are statistically warmer, and both November and March are noticeably more so.

On the bright side, with the shortest day of the year behind us, days are getting longer as we head toward the summer months, with earlier sunrises and the sun setting past 18:00 toward the middle of January. The average Spanish day is still almost a full two hours longer than at more distant northern European latitudes.

There's more good news when it comes to sunshine too, with an average of 6 hours of warm sunny weather per day. And as average daytime temperatures creep past 16°c, there are greater chances of “real feel” temperatures exceeding a very pleasant 20°c each day.

Of course, you will need a jacket if you want to enjoy evenings out at local bars, bistros and restaurants. An average overnight low of just 6°c feels positively arctic, but temperate and dry daytime conditions still make the Orihuela Costa an excellent choice of winter sun destination.

January tends to be dry, and historic annual averages suggest January will bring just 4 days of rain to the region. Typically, you should expect significantly less rainfall than the preceding four months, and around half the rain expected by some Northern European locales.

But everything's relative, and Berlin in Germany expects 15 rainy days in January, Stockholm in Sweden averages 18 days of rainfall, and even the upscale Italian city of Milan usually experiences 9 wet days during January.

Swimming pools are out-of-bounds to all but the bravest or most foolhardy, and the Mediterranean Sea is now at its coldest, maintaining an average water temperature of just 15°c.

Seawater temperatures will remain subdued and won't show a measurable increase until April, so a wetsuit is highly recommended for water sports at this time of year.

Boat Rental Cabo Roig offers the Mareti 450, a compact 4.5m leisure craft with the capacity to whisk up to 5 people across the water in comfort, powered by a spirited 15hp Suzuki outboard engine. The boat is renowned for its extraordinary stability and safety at sea.

The vessel is fully equipped for a successful sea adventure, featuring a GPS and depth gauge, Bluetooth speakers, a sundeck, awning, swim ladder, and an anchor, allowing guests to swim and snorkel.

The widest choice of summer season boats for hire without a licence, with 4 boats available. Sub-five metre boats with 15 hp engines, fuel is not included in the hire price.

Rumbo Torrevieja, Torrevieja

Kalima and Compass-class leisure boats for hire without a licence, and prices from €65 per hour. Boats seat a maximum of five passengers, including the pilot, and discounts are available for longer hire periods (fuel not included).

Please ensure you use your leisure craft responsibly and safely, and return it to the boat hire company in the same condition as you received it. In particular:-

Standup paddleboarding, often abbreviated to “SUP”, is a water sport born from surfing with roots originating in the Pacific island of Hawaii. Stand up paddle boarders stand on boards that float on the water's surface, using a paddle to propel themselves through the water.

Orihuela Costa's beautiful beaches entice visitors from across Europe and the world beyond. Each one is special and undeniably spectacular, but if we had to pick a personal favourite, it would be Cala Capitán Beach.

Okay, we lied – it would be Aguamarina beach, but that's not to say that there isn't something genuinely magical about Cala Capitán. In all honesty, we would be hard-pressed to choose between the two.

You see, of all 11 beaches in our part of the South Costa Blanca, Playa Cala Capitán is unique in several notable ways. Firstly, this is the only beach in Orihuela Costa to feature its own island. More specifically, it's an islet with a typically romantic Spanish name – Isla del Carmen.

Barely 50m long and half that wide, this rugged, craggy, low-lying barren piece of marine rock might not seem particularly impressive, but it is unique in our part of Spain and forms a natural lagoon at the beach's northernmost face.

Sparsely covered in wild shrubbery, Isla del Carmen can be reached without entering the water most of the year – dependent on the tide. The islet also contributes to the safety of the bathing waters further south along the beach's leading edge.

And that's one of the other unique features of Playa de Cala Capitán – a large proportion of the beach is hidden from view. Unlike other coves in the local area, the sands stretch out into the sea forming a diamond-like shape. It's the view most people are used to as they enter the beach, with a wide expanse of sand ahead.

But look around the corner to the right and this diamond has a tail, a long, thin spit of sand that runs north to south, overshadowed by tall cliffs along the western edge, and culminating in a rocky headland accompanied by another unexpected islet – the tiny Isla del Escullano.

These islets and the volcanic nature of the seabed along this stretch of coastline make Cala Capitán ideal for snorkelling, and the Mediterranean Sea waters here are rich in exotic marine life.

The beach itself is formed from fine lightly-coloured golden sand, with an official size of 6,992 m2 and a length of 152 m measured at the waterline. Mainly facing eastward, Cala Capitán benefits from most of its sunshine hours in the earlier hours of the day, and those cliffs cast a shadow over the southern part of the beach later in the afternoon.

Where to find the best beaches in South Costa Blanca

Cala Capitán forms part of the Orihuela Costa coastal promenade that extends 16 km around the coast, and a wide paved ornate pathway connects the beach with Cala Bosque in La Zenia to the north.

Headed south from the beach, the “Sendero Azul Cabo Roig” is a 2 km-long walkway that leads directly to Playa Cala la Caleta further south in Cabo Roig. This magnificent Blue Trail winds around the cape, treating visitors to unparalleled views of the Mediterranean Sea and spectacular vistas toward La Manga del Mar Menor.

Depending on your physical ability, the journey from Cala Capitán to La Caleta Beach takes around 25 minutes on foot. The path is illuminated at night, and safety railings are provided along the entire length. Bench seating is provided at intervals along the promenade. However, there are no facilities en route, so remember to take a bottle of water with you.

Cala Capitán offers a host of quality facilities. The beach has received Blue Flag accreditation every year since 2003, recognised for its ease of access, excellent water quality, and services for people with mobility issues.

Lifeguards are present on the beach throughout the summer and popular times such as Easter, and a traditional Spanish Chiringuito beach bar provides a full bar service and light bites directly on the sand each day throughout the late spring, summer, and early autumn months.

Is Cala Capitán Beach safe for children and families?

The beach is ideally suited to families with young children, with relatively calm bathing waters and a shallow depth that extends some way out. The only notable exception is the area adjacent to Isla de Carmen, and it's not unusual for lifeguards to prohibit bathing in the lagoon if conditions are less than perfect.

Playa de Cala Capitán is meticulously maintained by the Town Hall, and the beach benefits from a sports area, toilets, foot showers, and beach sunbed and parasol hire. Beach House Bar and Grill adjacent to the beach provides alternative dining choices, with a menu served until late six days a week.

This beach is understandably popular year-round, but accessibility is first-class and parking is thankfully abundant. The main car park on Calle Cala Capitán is ideally located closest to the beach – if a little small.

The good news is that there is an additional car park with generous on-street parking in Calle Mar Gruesa, and four further small car parks south of the beach along Avenida del Cabo. Each car park has direct access to the coastal promenade and parking is provided free of charge.

The luck of the Irish has been in limited supply of late, with the 10th-anniversary parade in Cabo Roig delayed for the past three years.

Originally scheduled to take place in March 2020, the Cabo Roig parade was one of the first events in the Orihuela Costa social calendar to be affected by the global pandemic, and the event was cancelled just days beforehand.

Emergency health measures prevented the St Patrick's Day parade from taking place in 2021, and in 2022 the parade was suspended yet again, this time due to unseasonably wet weather conditions.

An International Parade took place in May last year, but a March St Patrick's Day parade hasn't been seen on the streets of Cabo Roig since 2019. After a four-year absence, the belated 10th-anniversary parade is finally scheduled to take place on Friday 17th March 2023.

The annual St Patrick's Day parade in Cabo Roig owes its continued success to a dedicated team of organisers, generous and regular contributions from local businesses, and coordination between the St Patrick's Day Parade committee and Orihuela Town Hall.

The parade will start at 15:00 from Calle Agua. The route will head southward along Calle del Mar and turn right at the end of the road to proceed northward along the front of the strip beside the N-332.

Anthony Molloy, a member of the Donegal County Council in Ireland and a former captain of the Donegal county football team, will be this year's parade Marshall. He will be joined by members of the parade committee, the mayor, and councillors from the local Orihuela town hall.

The parade is expected to be the most colourful yet, with traditional bands, floats constructed by many of the local businesses, and dancers dressed in glamorous and elaborate costumes.

The family-friendly event will offer entertainment for children, live music all day (and long into the evening), and bars and restaurants along the strip will be offering a selection of special menus and, of course … Guinness!

The Spanish annual festivities are typically elaborate and vivid, celebrating Saint Patrick's Day in an inimitable fashion that is both wildly patriotic and imaginatively eccentric.

When it comes to St Patrick's Day, the luck of the Irish seems to have been in somewhat short supply in Spain over recent years.

Cabo Roig has hosted one of the largest St Patrick's Day celebrations in Europe for almost a decade, with the 10th Anniversary street party scheduled to take place on 17th March 2020.

But it was one of the first large scale local events axed from the social calendar due to the global health crisis in 2020 and was cancelled again in 2021.

Finally, the St Patrick's Day parade received the green light to go ahead on 17th March earlier this year, some three years since the last parade took place in 2019.

However, a period of unseasonably wet weather brought the well-laid plans to a last-minute halt, and once again, the revered and much-loved Cabo Roig St Patrick's Day parade was cancelled.

Undeterred, the organisers of the seminal Irish parade, the Cabo Roig Business Association and OC Avanza, are hosting a spectacular Cabo Roig International Parade this weekend that promises all the colour, energy, and music of the traditional St Patricks Day parade.

The Cabo Roig International Parade was initially announced on Friday 25th March, barely ten days after the cancellation of 2022's St Patrick's Day event, and the organisers are promising an extravaganza befitting the area.

Orihuela Costa has one of the most diverse varieties of cultures and nationalities in Continental Europe, with international residents from an estimated 106 countries living in our part of Spain.

The St Patrick's Day parade has always been an inclusive event, and this weekend's event is no exception, with the organisers inviting everyone of all nationalities and all ages to enjoy the family-friendly street party.

The parade committee promises the biggest and most spectacular parade ever staged in Cabo Roig. With a weather forecast predicting sunshine and amiable temperatures for the weekend, it's looking like the luck of the Irish might finally make a rather belated return to the Orihuela Costa.

The Cabo Roig International Parade will follow the usual St Patrick's Day parade route, and the roads around the immediate vicinity will be closed to traffic from 13:00 on Saturday.

Parking is not permitted on the parade route in Calle del Mar, Calle Agua, or Calle Cielo that runs down the Cabo Roig strip in front of the bars, businesses, and restaurants.

Visitors looking for parking may find alternative on-street parking in neighbouring urbanisations such as La Regia, Aguamarina, or in the direction of Cabo Roig's Playa La Caleta beach.

The Trinity Bar in Cabo Roig is going all-out with a day of entertainment this Saturday including live music from Jimmy Mac, The Cantinas, and Johnny Greannan, with the day rounding out with karaoke and a disco from 23:30.

The venue offers an excellent location along the parade route to take in the show. But you'll need to arrive early to get the best seats in the house as reservations for the event are not accepted.

The famous Cabo Roig Strip, a line of bars, clubs, cafes and restaurants that form a roadside promenade adjacent to the main N-332 coast road, will be turned into a Mediterranean Sea of green Irish pride for the day.

Traditionally a Christian feast day, St Patricks Day has become an iconic institution, representing a special time for Irish people the world over to celebrate their nationality and the heritage of the Emerald Isle in a somewhat unrestrained manner.

Originally planned for March 2020, the 10th-anniversary celebration was one of the first major events cancelled following the declaration of the State of Emergency in Spain, just days before taking place.

The last St Patrick's Day celebration took place on the coast in 2019 and after a three-year hiatus, the Irish parade returns to the streets of Orihuela Costa, with thousands of residents and international visitors expected to attend.

This year's event is hosted by Grand Marshall, Steve Collins. Known as the “Celtic Warrior”, Dublin-born Steve Collins is the most successful male Irish boxer in recent professional boxing history, with a career spanning almost a decade from 1986 to 1997.

The parade is expected to be the most colourful yet, with traditional bands, floats constructed by many of the local businesses, and dancers dressed in glamorous and elaborate costumes.

The family-friendly event will offer entertainment for children, music from local musicians all day, and bars and restaurants along the strip will be offering a selection of special menus and, of course … Guinness!

McCafferty's Irish Bar in Cabo Roig starts the party at 14:00 with live music from Anton Glackin and Paul Cullen. Their weekend spectacular continues with music every evening and a special guest appearance by Pat Coyne.

The Trinity Bar is going all-out with a veritable buffet of Irish musical talent, kicking off with Jimmy Mac from County Antrim at midday. The live music continues throughout the day with appearances from Leanne Rowlette, Graham Monaghan, and Johnny Grennan.

Off the strip, the Ivy Bar at the Citrus Centre in Playa Flamenca opens at 13:00 for an Irish brunch followed by a day of musical entertainment from Sinead Hansard and DJ Mick Nottingham. The day ends with a Karaoke party.

And one of the most famous Irish venues in Orihuela Costa, Paddy's Point in La Zenia, is offering bacon and cabbage and beef and Guinness stew alongside live entertainment from Baz Norton, Austin Carter, and Paul Cullen.
