Our neighbouring Mediterranean coastal city of Torrevieja is no exception. This year, the Costa Blanca's southern capital is pulling out all the stops to provide a religious and cultural spectacle that will dazzle the crowds.

The Torrevieja Easter parades and the accompanying fiestas are a faithful tradition, with spectacular processions that encompass and showcase the enchanting magic of Spanish culture and Catholic religious mystery.

The processions are accompanied by religious music and chants, adding to the solemn and reflective atmosphere.

Easter Holy Week parades to take place in Torrevieja

The celebrations last one whole week, starting on Palm Sunday each year, and culminating with some genuinely sensational parades throughout the city the following weekend.

The Easter processions that wind their way through the bustling streets of Torrevieja's metropolis have their roots firmly in medieval Spain, with the adoption of widespread religious rituals popularised during the Baroque Period.

The processions are typified by solemn brotherhoods and religious fraternities of both men and women that dress in traditional robes known as the “Nazareno”.

The ancient penitential garment consists of a tunic, a cloak, and a foreboding hood with a conical tip that conceals the face of the wearer.

The type of garment worn depends on the particular procession, and the religious colours and crest of the brotherhood or fraternity determine the exact colour and form of the Nazareno.

The annual parade schedule kicks off on Sunday 29th March, with two Palm Sunday parades departing from the Plaza de Oriente in the city centre, one at 10:30, the other at 18:30.

Additional parades take place each day during the week, with two further processions scheduled for the evening of Thursday 2nd April. The first occurs at 22:00, with another following at midnight.

The largest procession of Holy Week takes place on Good Friday, 3rd April 2026. The “Procesión Viernes Santo” involves 15 local brotherhoods and an audience of thousands, who will watch the parade depart the Parroquia Arciprestal de la Inmaculada Concepción at 19:00.

You'll need to be an early riser to catch Easter Sunday's procession, with the “Domingo de Resurreccion” starting at 08:00 on Sunday 5th April.

The parade begins at the Parroquia Arciprestal de la Inmaculada Concepción and winds through Torrevieja's small streets surrounding the square.

Starting as a solemn march through the city's streets, the procession ends on an upbeat note, with rousing music, a shower of flower petals, ringing church bells, and fire-crackers thrown in the street.

Despite the early hour, the procession is well attended, with people coming to enjoy the infectious emotion that emerges from the passionate style in which Torrevieja celebrates the resurrection of Jesus Christ.

A dedicated junior track offers children up to the age of 10 years a safe racing experience under the supervision of a motorsport marshal, whilst a full-size championship track offers adults the high-octane thrills of karting.

Children aged 10 years or over are welcome to participate in races held on the championship track, and adults can choose from standard 270 cc karts, a double kart that accommodates the driver and a copilot, or a high-performance Honda 400 cc racing kart.

We've compiled the latest data from the leading weather websites to bring you an overview of what you can expect if you're living in Playa Flamenca, or planning a visit to our part of Spain in March.

We're just a couple of days into March, and the difference is certainly very noticeable this year, with the Orihuela Costa already experiencing spring-like conditions, sunshine, and temperatures exceeding the monthly average both day and night.

The onset of spring can signal the possibility of additional rainfall, and after an unusually dry and mild February, any rain would be welcomed. Nonetheless, annual averages suggest March will bring just 3 days of rain.

On the bright side, days are now a full hour longer than they were just a month ago, with earlier sunrises and the sun setting past 19:00 toward the middle of March. The average Spanish day is still a good hour longer than at more distant northern latitudes.

There's more good news when it comes to sunshine too, with an average of 7 hours of warm sunny weather per day. And as average daytime temperatures creep past 18°c, there are greater chances of “real feel” temperatures exceeding a very pleasant 25°c each day.

Of course, you will still need a light jacket if you want to enjoy evenings out at local bars, bistros and restaurants, but temperate and dry daytime conditions still make the Orihuela Costa an excellent choice of winter sun destination.

You'll find the locals buying fresh regional produce to create meals at home for the forthcoming week, often stopping for a bite to eat and a drink at one of the market's laid-back café bars. They are well worth a visit during your time here, with visitors met by the beautiful colours of the clothes and the fresh smell of the fruit, vegetables and herbs on sale.

The local markets typically take place from 09:00 and finish at around 13:30. Although sometimes you will find the odd afternoon market, which starts from 16:00 until about 20:00. At the larger markets, car parks are provided free of charge, and there are normally attendants present to help you find an available space during busy periods.

The markets sell everything you might need. The fruit and vegetable stalls are run by local farmers, ensuring the quality and freshness of the locally grown Valencian produce. You will always find a bargain on these stalls, especially if you buy seasonal fruit and vegetables.

Depending on the season, 2 kg of strawberries can cost as little as €5. The same money can buy 6 kg of oranges at other times of the year.

You will find stalls selling Spanish cheese, Chorizo and Iberian hams. They are definitely worth a try to discover that authentic Mediterranean flavour in your food.

Alongside these stalls, others will sell seasonal herbs, olives, and fresh bread; the aroma will positively entice you.

As you wander around the local markets you will hear the bartering between the stallholders and their customers offering a good discount on the advertised price, and it's all part of the experience.

And of course, there is more than just food on offer. You will find locally made Valencian leather goods such as handbags, belts and high-quality footwear. The smell of tannin hangs in the air, and the quality and price of the handmade goods are virtually unbeatable, with a small Spanish-made leather clutch or handbag available for approximately €10.

Spanish-manufactured shoes are a veritable bargain with prices from €15, and you'll always get the best advice for sizing to suit your particular requirements (Spanish sizes might be a little different than you're used to).

All Orihuela Costa street markets feature lots of stalls offering the spectrum of Spanish kitchenware, cooking pans and pots, seasonal plants such as herbs and chillies, and freshly cut bouquets of flowers.

Fashion features at each market too, and the clothes stalls are always worth a look as the fabrics are locally sourced and perfect for the hot weather that the Orihuela Costa experiences in the height of summer. Take a close look at the labels and you might be lucky enough to pick up a beautiful Spanish-made dress for as little as €15.

But the Orihuela Costa street markets would be incomplete without the traditional Spanish handmade lace goods the area is renowned for. Thankfully, you'll find plenty of shawls, tablecloths and many other beautifully produced clothing and homewares.

The delicate designs are eye-catching and of amazing quality, and they make perfect gifts to take back home for family or friends.

And “colossal” is no understatement. 1.3 million people flocked to the Murcian capital to witness the spectacular parade last year, with hotels in the city bursting at full capacity on Good Friday.

The Burial of the Sardine, or the “Entierro de la Sardina”, is a tradition that dates back to 1851, with the quirky festival celebrating its 175th iteration this year in 2026.

It's the pinnacle of Murcia's social calendar, and this extraordinary event marks the dramatic finale of the city's “Fiestas de Primavera,” earning its designation as a Fiesta of International Tourist Interest, noted for its originality and diversity.

The Burial of the Sardine, a spectacular and unusual parade

The divine and seemingly immortal slender fish at the heart of the festivities is part of an elaborate grand parade that features floats, costumed groups, music, and a famously chaotic tradition of throwing toys and gifts to the crowd in honour of the Gods of Olympus.

The “Gran Desfile del Entierro de la Sardina” features giants with oversized heads, firebrands, acrobats, demons, and groups of Brazilian samba guards accompanying dozens of exotically decorated floats, with each float belonging to a sardine association, or “Agrupación Sardinera”.

The parade concludes with the burning of the sardine – an oversized, brightly painted effigy of the perennial fish made of stone and cardboard, in a playful and symbolic farewell.

This act of fire, accompanied by music and fireworks, is more than mere spectacle: it is a cathartic, almost mythic ritual representing renewal and the joyous rebirth of the season.

A tradition of heritage in Murcia, the “Entierro de la Sardina”

In the days leading up to the burial, the city comes alive with a spectrum of events, including the Testamento de Doña Sardina, a deliberately humorous reading of Doña Sardina's “Last Will” punctuated with satire and social commentary.

Over the decades, the event has grown into an elaborate annual tradition with a distinctive Murcian flavour. Today, the event is a massive undertaking for the city of Murcia, requiring the deployment of 600 local police officers, 250 fire safety personnel, and nearly 700 street cleaners.

Many central streets are closed to traffic, and large parts of the route are restricted during the parade (such as Gran Vía, Plaza Circular, Avenida de la Constitución), making street parking and driving in the historic centre extremely difficult.

Free park-and-ride parking areas (Aparcamientos Disuasorios) operate on the day of the festival to keep the centre less congested. These are intended for visitors and locals alike, and visitors have the option to walk or use local transport to get to the city centre.

The main parade, the “Gran Desfile del Entierro de la Sardina”, starts at 20:30, but be aware that the city centre becomes very busy well before this time, with spectators arriving early to secure good viewing spots. Allow plenty of time for local travel into the city itself.

The parade proceeds along major thoroughfares, including Avenida de San Juan de la Cruz, Santa Joaquina de Vedruna, Calle Princesa, and Alameda de Colón. From here it continues through historic parts of the city, passing landmarks like Plaza de Camachos and Puente Viejo.

Known locally as Chiringuitos, these diminutive café-style bars provide residents and visitors with light refreshments whilst here on holiday. They're a popular meeting point and watering hole.

The beach bars along the Orihuela Costa coast have received a significant overhaul over the past few years, and the local organisations that administer their day-to-day operations have spared no expense to ensure that the facilities meet expectations.

Each one has been prefabricated off-site from sustainable materials to minimise the impact on the fragile beach environment.

In addition to the cool eco-style, designed to fit in with their surroundings, the bars have received improved toilet facilities and dedicated lifeguard stations fully equipped by the local authorities to deal with most emergencies during the summer season.

The annual Vega Baja celebration, now in its twenty-sixth year, will see locals and visitors flock to a pretty plaza and the beach in Torrevieja's northernmost urbanisation to enjoy a midday barbecue.

The party attracts people from across the Torrevieja and Vega Baja regions, local residents, and visitors from colder climes in Northern Europe, who visit Torre La Mata for this special day.

Marking the feast of San Antón, partygoers attending this gastronomic celebration typically bring their own tables, chairs, barbecues, and supplementary food and drink, spilling from the picturesque plaza onto La Mata's resplendent golden sandy beach.

Completely free of charge, the event organisers provide more than 600 kg of exceptional quality pork produce, 150 kg of fresh bread, celery, and 150 litres of locally produced La Mata wine – a pale-straw hued fine white wine made from the grapes of Merseguera vines.

Pork meat, including fine ham, will be distributed as part of the meal, and pork chops will be cooked on portable barbecues in front of the “Parroquia Nuestra Señora del Rosario” church.

At the end of the celebrations, the organisers hold a ham raffle to raise funds for the next meal – due to be held in January 2027!

The public party is free to attend and requires no booking or registration, but participants are urged to arrive on time to collect their food. Local shops and café bars will be open to provide additional refreshments.
