The group has become a valuable source of local information for visitors to the Orihuela Costa, people who live here, and people who aspire to one day be our neighbours.

Between the La Zenia Facebook page, our Instagram followers, and the La Zenia Community Facebook Group, the online social presence represents the thoughts, interests, questions and opinions of more than 75,000 people and reputable local organisations too numerous to count.

So we thought this might be a good time to introduce some basic Facebook Group rules, so everyone knows how to interact, and we can all maintain the high expectations members hold for the group culture.

Facebook Group Rules Summary

1. Rule number one: always be kind, thoughtful and courteous
2. No hate speech, judgmental comments, harassment or bullying
3. Damaging or misleading information (or “fake news”) is not permitted
4. No promotion of a commercial business or Spam postings
5. No promotion of any other social groups or Facebook pages
6. No properties for sale within the La Zenia group
7. Respect for animals and the prevention of animal cruelty
8. No illegal content, intellectual property, defamatory or adult content

1) Rule number one: always be kind, thoughtful and courteous

We're all in this together to create a welcoming environment so let's treat everyone with respect. Healthy debates are natural, but kindness, tolerance and understanding are required.

We're all from different backgrounds and countries, and we speak a multitude of languages, so don't be surprised if someone else's opinion doesn't conform to yours. They're entitled to their opinion too.

The group is not exclusively an English or Spanish language group, and you are welcome to converse with other members in the language of your choice. Facebook boasts powerful translation tools that are easy to use on a vast array of devices, so feel free to post in the language you're most comfortable with.

2) No hate speech, judgmental comments, harassment or bullying

We want the Facebook Community Group to be a safe online space for everyone, and we want people to feel comfortable asking questions. Bullying of any kind isn't allowed, and degrading or hurtful comments about race, religion, culture, sexual orientation, gender, physical appearance, ability or disability, age, or national identity will not be tolerated.

Judgmental comments are unnecessary and have a chilling effect on the group. They hurt people, and make it harder for people to ask questions or reach out to others when they need help. Typically, judgmental comments tend to be off-topic, have no value, suggest that the principles of the post should align with theirs, or relay information that is irrelevant to the spirit of the original post.

Being part of the group requires mutual trust. Posts or comments that breach personal privacy, or identify people without their express consent, either by their name or appearance, are not permitted within the group. Comments that wander off-topic will be deleted.

Posts or comments which include photos of official ID cards, bank cards, NIE/TIE documentation, EHIC/GHIC cards, driving licences, passports, or any other form of financial or government-issued documents are not permitted.

3) Damaging or misleading information (or “fake news”) is not permitted

We make every effort to ensure that factual information in the group is accurate, and fake news, scams, conspiracy theories, misleading content, unsubstantiated speculation, or posts containing incorrect or out-of-date information are not permitted.

Sharing content that includes a dead link, a URL that doesn't resolve, or content that is unavailable, inaccessible, or hidden behind a paywall is not permitted. Posts that are unclear, ambiguous, or incomplete will be deleted.

The group is a social communication platform for people. Automated, computer-generated AI, or artificial content created with a program or application, isn't permitted in the group.

Our Facebook Group rules do not permit the publication of any post or comment that might potentially damage any business. If you have had a bad experience with a local business here in Spain, please speak privately with a representative of that business directly.

4) No promotion of a commercial business or Spam postings

The La Zenia Community Facebook Group is a social group intended to benefit the people who live on the Orihuela Costa, the people who visit our beautiful part of Spain, and the social businesses that we enjoy every day.

As a social group, local bars, restaurants, gyms and fitness centres, social and sports clubs, and other social venues are welcome to promote their business or advertise in the group. After all, the rich and varied choices that social venues bring to the area are a vital ingredient of life here in Spain.

An exception is also made for :

• Local artists and artisans promoting their products (in whatever tangible form that may take).
• Local food businesses offering delivery services.
• Businesses offering local on-location leisure services in Orihuela Costa (for instance, quad-bike tours, adventures, or outdoor experiences).
• Local social events in Orihuela Costa, including charitable events and functions.
• Organisations involved in adult education at a centre or venue in Orihuela Costa.
• People or businesses offering local extracurricular education services for children (such as swimming lessons).

5) No promotion of any other Facebook groups

We love to hear your personal recommendations of other local businesses, so if you've got something nice to say about a restaurant, a hairdresser, or even your gardener or plumber, let everyone know about it. Just not your accountant, lawyer, or estate agent.

Personal recommendations are allowed, self-promotion isn't, and please don't advertise or promote other Facebook groups.

You are welcome to post directly in the group or share from your page, but please don't share posts from other groups. Depending on the group's settings, shared posts may not display properly or be visible to people who aren't members of that group.

6) No commercial items for sale or promoting properties

Facebook Marketplace is a great place to buy and sell on the Orihuela Costa, but individual members may post their pre-owned items for sale in the group. However, please do not offer the following items :

• Tickets (including flight tickets), unless they are for local events in Orihuela Costa, Torrevieja, Vega Baja, or the Region of Murcia.
• Clothing, footwear, or accessories (including designer brands).
• Bags, wallets, purses, or sunglasses (including designer brands).
• Videos, DVD's, CD's or other recorded material.
• Foreign registered vehicles.
• Car parts or accessories.
• Age-restricted products.

Commercial sellers such as vehicle retailers, perfumery, water treatment, home improvements, or other for-profit businesses, services or retail venues won't be permitted to advertise in the group.

Minimally, posts must include a price and the location for collection. Posts for items given away free for collection, or posts for items for sale by registered charities are also accepted in the group.

Content that provides or seeks advice, information, tips, and self-help for buying or selling property is not accepted in the group. Advertising for residential or commercial property for sale is not permitted within the group. Please contact a local real estate agent or a registered property professional.

Tourist rental property and advertising for short-term holiday accommodation will only be accepted in the group when accompanied by the Valencian Government's VT tourist licence number – valid, and displayed in a prominent location.

Seasonal rentals, long-term rentals, or properties with an AT tourist number are not permitted. Posts for rental property located outside of Orihuela Costa may be removed, and won't be permitted during May, June, July, August and September.

7) Respect for animals and the prevention of animal cruelty

Posts or comments that are disrespectful to any animal or its owner(s) are not permitted. Posting images or comments about animal abuse or suffering, threatening an animal or its owner with harm or distress, or inciting others to engage in the abuse of animals is one of the quickest ways to find yourself permanently excluded from the group.

If you've lost your pet or found one, please feel free to share the information with group members. Posts about animal rehoming, sales, or fostering are not permitted.

8) No illegal content, intellectual property, defamatory or adult content

We strive to maintain a family-friendly environment for everyone. Our Facebook Group rules don't allow swearing, depictions of nudity, or any form of content suited only for an adult audience.

Posts or comments that might be illegal (or refer to goods or services that might be illegal), defamatory, or may infringe intellectual property rights or copyright are prohibited. Do not post photos or images that contain police officers, paramedics, or any member of our security or emergency services personnel.

Posts for illegal taxis or unlicenced airport transfer services are not permitted. Using the group to solicit illegal and unlicenced taxi services, or personal car or taxi “sharing” service (with or without payment) is not permitted.

Posts regarding the purchase, sale, gift or trade of prescription or non-prescription pharmaceutical drugs and/or non-medical (recreational) drugs, are prohibited by Facebook's Community Standards on regulated goods.

Posts or comments which are needlessly inflammatory, divisive, or incite hatred, crime, or violence have no place within the group. Commercial clickbait that is deceptive, sensationalised, or otherwise misleading, is not permitted.

Fearmongering, or content which may arouse public fear, worry, or alarm is not permitted. Such posts are usually accompanied by a call for increased vigilance, alertness, or awareness, but only serve to increase fear, particularly for those living alone, the elderly, and the most vulnerable members of our community.

Posts about crimes, particularly crimes against the person such as muggings, or property-related crimes such as home burglary, mislead the reader into believing that crimes are more common than they are, and may create a disproportional belief that nowhere is safe.

Reports of criminal activity or crimes should be reported to, and dealt with by, the police and appointed authorities.

Posts asking other members to transport or carry any object, package, or item on board a commercial aircraft, across borders, or through customs checkpoints in any country on their behalf will be deleted.

Content critical of national, local, or regional public service authorities in Spain is not permitted in the group. Do not publish comments or posts about criminal investigations (ongoing or not) or investigations carried out by the authorities of any country.

In particular, posts intended to subvert police operations (civil or criminal), including the location or use of speed measurement and road safety equipment are not permitted.

Posts or comments regarding matters related to civil law including but not limited to financial claims, business or workplace disputes, tenancy disputes, litigation, family law (such as divorce), or any ongoing civil action, are not permitted in the group. Please seek advice from a registered lawyer in Spain.

The Community Group is an inclusive social group, so religious or political content is not permitted, including content that reflects the religious beliefs or political opinions of a person or group.

Alongside obtaining your NIE number, registering on the Padron is one of the crucial administration procedures residents from other countries should carry out shortly after moving to Spain.

This register records information about the people living in the municipality, and data from municipal Padrons is used to formulate the national census.

Every town hall throughout the Spanish territory administers its Padron, and each municipal authority sends population information from the register to the Spanish National Institute of Statistics (Instituto Nacional de Estadística, INE) to calculate accurate population statistics.

These statistics are important to local authorities because the data determines the levels of government funding each area gets allocated each year. In short, if more people are registered in the municipal area, the town hall is given more money to fund essential public services.

The benefits of registering on the Padron

Registering on the Padron is mandatory for all residents of Spain, and grants access to various public services. For instance, residents must register to receive healthcare through the Spanish national healthcare system, enrol in education, and obtain other social services.

Furthermore, the Padron is used for voting in local, regional, and national elections. If you're not registered on the Padron, you won't be able to exercise your right to vote in Spain.

Once you're registered on the Padron, you'll receive a registration certificate, the “Certificado de Empadronamiento”. You can use this document for a range of purposes, including :

• Enrolling children in school
• Registering for healthcare
• Registering for Social Security
• Applying for a driving license
• Applying for residency in Spain

Who should be registered on the Padron?

Anyone living in Spain for more than six months (aged 14 years or older) must register on the Padron. The registration process should be completed within three months of arriving in Spain.

The Padron is a register of residents, so if you don't live in Spain or you don't plan to spend more than six months in the country, you should not register on the Padron.

Most importantly, overseas residents who purchase a property in Spain to use as a holiday home or investment (not as their main habitual residence), should not register on the Padron.

To register on the Padron you'll need a valid in-date passport or national identity document. Nationals of a Member State of the EU or EEA (Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein and Switzerland), will also need to provide the Residency Certificate from their country of origin.

How do you register on the Padron?

The easiest way to register on the Padron in Orihuela Costa is by visiting the online Electronic Office on the municipal website at orihuela.es.

The town hall has launched a series of video tutorials that simplify the understanding of municipal registration procedures, allowing residents to complete their Padron application online.

In a little over five years, the group has developed into the premiere digital community for our part of Spain, with more than 50,000 members from all corners of the world.

And there seems to be no stopping the popularity and growth of the online neighbourhood, with the group welcoming more than 100 new members during a typical day. But who is in the group, and where do they come from?

That's an interesting question, and one we hadn't thought about until Marco asked his fellow members last week, posting “Hello everyone, I would like to know where most of you come from? I come from Baden-Württemberg in Germany”.

His question attracted more than 850 responses and revealed just how genuinely global the community group has become. So we analysed the responses to the post, did a little research of our own, and crunched the numbers to uncover some super little factoids that make interesting reading.

La Zenia goes global, with members in 37 countries worldwide

Multi-cultural and multi-lingual in every possible way, the group is graced with members from 37 countries including far-flung destinations such as Canada, Argentina, Uruguay, the USA and Australia.

Most communication within the group takes place in English, but Facebook's advanced translation tools make it easy for members to get in-touch and socialise with other people in the language they're most comfortable with – whatever their native language.

In fact, only one-fifth of the group membership originates from the United Kingdom (20.1%), and almost two-thirds (64.7%) identify as coming from a non-English speaking country.

Like Marco, members from Germany represent the second most populous nationality, with 15.4% of the group membership reporting the Federal Republic as their country of origin.

Our established local Irish community make up 15.1% of the digital population, with members from Belgium and Sweden rounding out the top 5 nations most nominally represented within the group.

The largest community group in the Costa Blanca South

Together, members from the United Kingdom, Germany, and Ireland make up around half of the total group numbers, with 50.6% of the group originating from these three countries.

Members from a European Union country represent the majority of the group membership with 67.9% of the group coming from one of the 27 member states. In fact, the group has members in all EU countries except Greece, Latvia, Malta, Slovenia, and Cyprus.

Other notable continental European destinations include Norway, (with the country taking 6th position), Switzerland, Russia, and Ukraine, with additional members from the North Atlantic island of Iceland accounting for approximately 2.3% of the group membership.

Closer to home, members from Spain round out the top 10, with 2.1% of survey respondents reporting the Iberian peninsular as their country of origin, with Finland, Poland, Hungary, Denmark and Lithuania finishing just outside the top 10 countries.

The unexpected loss of some digital TV services was forecast back in March 2018. At that time, the European Commission warned that “Persons residing in the United Kingdom will no longer benefit from their digital content subscriptions when travelling to the EU, once the UK leaves the European Union.”

Online subscription services in the EU are protected by regulations introduced in 2017 that force paid-for service providers to ensure that consumers can access their online digital content within the EU regardless of their location.

Known as the cross-border portability regulation, the objective of the legislation is to broaden access to online content to ensure that Europeans can enjoy their online subscriptions to films, sports events, eBooks, video games and music services anywhere.

But with the expiration of the transition period and the United Kingdom's withdrawal from the European Union, the portability rules no longer apply to UK-based paid-for online content providers.

Digital TV services from Amazon and Sky

An updated statement on the Sky website reports “There are certain EU rules which mean people in the EU can use online content services across all EU countries. From 1 January 2021, the UK won't be part of the EU, so we won't provide our service in the same way.”

“You won't be entitled to stream Sky outside the UK using your Sky Go, Sky Kids, Sky Sports, Sky Sports Mobile TV and Sky Sports Box Office apps. Some Sky apps will allow you to download your favourite shows and movies over WiFi before you leave the UK to watch offline while you're abroad.”

That means those on holiday will no longer be able to catch up on the latest episode of Love Island, stream a football fixture, or keep the kids entertained with a Paw Patrol boxset at the airport before the flight home.

The availability of Amazon Prime Video services for UK residents living in Spain has been affected, and subscribers are advised to change their account location settings to view localised content. The change means that some premium content, such as Premier League football, won't be available to view in Spain or any part of the European Union.

A notice on the Amazon website states “From January 1st 2021 customers from the United Kingdom won't have access to the same titles as they do when watching Amazon Prime Video in their home country”.

Netflix has promised to continue to support current digital TV subscriptions for UK travellers and international residents post-Brexit. A notice on the company's website states “For countries within the European Union, we provide the same content as your previous home country for a limited period.”

Netflix streaming services to continue in the EU

Nonetheless, Netflix streaming services remain available in full to more than 190 countries including Spain. “Our library of TV shows and movies varies based on the country” stated the American global content platform.

Visitors and holidaymakers from the UK were used to taking their favourite dramas, sports and movies with them on holiday – all just the swipe of a finger away. And whilst the European legislation was designed to protect the rights of travellers abroad, UK residents throughout Europe have relied on consistent access to their digital TV services from home.

Yesterday, local residents on the Orihuela Costa were reporting problems on the La Zenia Community Group, with members describing a variety of playback issues. “Netflix UK and USA still fine but Amazon UK unavailable, now so no premiership streaming,” wrote Grange.

The change has affected UK-based streaming TV viewers throughout Europe, with Bjorn from Norway writing “So that's why suddenly Amazon Prime said ‘This content is not available in your region.' We are currently in Norway so it cannot be only in Spain.”

Residents of Orihuela Costa with paid-for digital content accounts with Amazon or Netflix already based in Spain will remain unaffected by the changes.
