The mammoth National Beach Volleyball Circuit is the official event of the Royal Spanish Volleyball Federation (RFEVB).

Playa Cala Bosque will once again be transformed into one of the South Costa Blanca's most dynamic sporting stages, as the beach hosts a major international sports festival combining elite competition and grassroots participation.

Almost 100 competitors will fight for the championship and a 10,000 € grand cash prize, with participants from the men's and women's categories competing at this stage of the national competition.

Playa Cala Bosque to host two sporting events

The 2026 edition is structured around two headline competitions, each delivering high-performance sport. The main event takes place from Thursday 4th June until Sunday 7th June.

This 3rd stage of the 3-star national beach volleyball tournament represents a key stepping stone within the Spanish volleyball system, with athletes competing in the two previous stages hosted in Madrid and Marbella beforehand.

The following weekend, from Friday 12th June until Sunday 14th June, Orihuela Costa steps up to a global level with the arrival of the ITF Beach Tennis World Tour, hosting an international tournament under the supervision of the International Tennis Federation (ITF) and the Royal Spanish Tennis Federation (RFET).

Both events will feature a central stadium with spectator seating, food trucks, leisure zones, and a hospitality area.

Thousands of residents and tourists alike are expected to attend the tournaments to enjoy the sporting spectacle and to support the native Spanish teams.

The event aims to unite families, adults of all generations, and young people, to participate in a fun and energetic event, and show their support for the work of the Spanish Red Cross.

Experienced local yoga instructors will volunteer their time, and offer continuous yoga sessions for six consecutive hours.

Open to everyone, regardless of age or fitness level, visitors can participate in any (or all) of the sessions by making a donation in the collection boxes set up by the Spanish Red Cross on the Flamenca Beach esplanade.

These donations will help support projects aimed at combating loneliness within the community.

The charity Yoga Marathon will combine sport, emotional well-being, and solidarity, and the Spanish Red Cross will set up an information stand on Playa Flamenca's esplanade where volunteers will encourage participation and collect donations.

In addition, the organisation will have blood pressure checks available for visitors who need them, and will offer advice and recommendations on health and emotional well-being.

The Spanish Red Cross is part of the world's largest humanitarian movement. It collaborates with public and private entities to ensure that aid reaches everyone who needs it, wherever and whenever they need it.

Every golf course offers a variety of world-class facilities, from fine dining restaurants to casual bars and cafes. It's a wonderful way to spend a relaxing day away from the hustle and bustle of the Orihuela Costa's beaches, areas which can be particularly busy during the height of summer.

Villamartin Golf Course is the closest to La Zenia. It was one of the first to be established in the local area and is one of only four local courses to be included in the list of Top 100 Golf Courses in Spain for 2026.

One of the larger golf courses with a 6,277 m round and par 72, players can enjoy a course whose lawns, neatly manicured to the highest standards, are only enhanced by the lush vegetation and fauna.

The open layout is an easy walk with minimal traffic interference, and whilst a buggy is available, it is unnecessary for most able-bodied players.

Originally opened in 1988, the golf course has seen perpetual development and upgrades to keep the club at the leading edge of the sport.

Las Ramblas Golf, Campoamor

Las Ramblas golf course is built into a beautiful landscape of Mediterranean pines and natural ravines. Although not particularly long, its rugged landscape and beautiful trees make the game more enjoyable.

Pedalos, family-friendly fun in Orihuela Costa

These creature-themed, people-powered, super cruisers pack a lot of fun into a tiny space. You'll find them parked on the beaches of Cala La Caleta in Cabo Roig, Cala Bosque in La Zenia, or Playa de la Glea in Dehesa de Campoamor.

The boats come complete with 4 seats and a slide, and cost 24 € to rent for 60 minutes of exhausting but rewarding seafaring fun. All ages are welcome to pedalo, but children under 14 must be accompanied by an adult at all times.

Kayaking is an activity suitable for all ages, perfect for nature and sea lovers. There are single-seat and double kayaks available at Playa de la Glea, so you can enjoy the experience with children without worrying about them getting tired.

Paddleboarding is super-fun and easy to master. The SUP boards provide a relaxing way to enjoy the Mediterranean Sea in a safe location at Cabo Roig's exquisite beach, and it's a great activity for couples and families too.

Standup paddleboarding, often abbreviated to “SUP”, is a water sport born from surfing with roots originating in the Pacific island of Hawaii. Stand up paddle boarders stand on boards that float on the water's surface, using a paddle to propel themselves through the water.

Paddle boarding tends to be a more relaxed pastime compared to the adrenalin-fuelled wave-chasing sport of surfing, and paddleboards are wider and longer than surfboards.

Crucially, unlike surf boards, paddle boards are easier to master and ideally suited to beginners and families because they're much more naturally stable than their surfing counterparts.

The sport has grown in popularity around the world and led to variations of the sport including paddleboard surfing, paddle board fishing, stand up paddle board touring, and SUP yoga – the latter typically taking place on calm water such as lakes or bays.

The fabulous weather, the laidback lifestyle, and the healthy Mediterranean climate are just some of the reasons people flock to the Costa Blanca at this time of year.

But it's important to make sure you take good care of yourself and your family while you're here, and to understand that fun in the sun comes with its own set of challenges.

Here's our guide to staying healthy on your holiday in Spain, the most common health complaints, how to prevent them, and how to treat them.

Reducing the risk of sunburn

The hottest part of the day on the Costa Blanca occurs between 2.00 pm and 6.00 pm. For people with sensitive skin, just being in direct sunlight unprotected for 20 minutes is enough to cause serious sunburn – less for a baby or young child.

Always apply a high-factor sun cream and wear a sunhat and sunglasses with UV protection which cover a large percentage of the face.

Children should always use a factor 50 sun cream, regardless of their skin tone. If you're planning a dip in the inviting Mediterranean waters or a swimming pool, use a water-resistant sun cream and reapply regularly throughout the day.

Ensure that young children are as covered as possible when at the beach or water park. SPF and UV protective swimwear is widely available online, and you may want to consider specialised clothing for adults in your party.

If you do suffer from sunburn this summer take a cool shower to reduce the redness and burning sensation on the skin, gently pressing the skin dry with a towel.

Sleep uncovered overnight with a fan on to avoid agitating sore and inflamed skin, and try to avoid using air conditioning. Drink plenty of water and avoid dehydrating fluids such as caffeine-based drinks and alcohol.

Apply Aloe Vera Gel liberally to affected areas and keep the bottle in the fridge. The gel will effectively cool and rehydrate the skin and calm heat rash, reducing the risk of prickly heat.

You'll find the gel available at all pharmacies, and the Spanish supermarket Mercadona offers an excellent Aloe Vera Gel available in stores locally.

Stay indoors in a cool environment for 24 hours to help the skin recover and avoid body spray or deodorants. Once the sunburn is no longer sore, apply rehydrating body cream overnight to repair the damaged skin.

Avoiding heatstroke

Heatstroke is not only unpleasant but it can cause death in the very young or elderly in extreme cases.

Wear lightweight, pale-coloured clothes, and avoid fabrics containing a high percentage of polyester or Lycra, as these fabrics trap the heat close to your skin and stop the skin from breathing.

Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated and eat fruits with a high water content such as watermelon.

Limit the amount of time spent directly in the sun and always wear a hat which protects both the top of the head and the back of the neck. Placing a wet towel around your neck will help to keep your body temperature low.

Carry a water spray bottle for your face to provide a mist that will cool you down.

Relax and take a siesta during the hottest part of the day and try to plan activities for during the morning or early evening.

If you are unlucky enough to suffer from heatstroke stay inside in a cool dark room and drink plenty of water. Take a cold shower to help reduce your body temperature.

If you feel nauseous or suffer from diarrhoea consider drinking flat cola. This helps replace lost salts and electrolytes. Basic analgesia such as paracetamol will relieve headache symptoms.

Young children suffering from severe heatstroke may become floppy and sleepy, and the elderly may become confused and disorientated. In these circumstances, seek medical assistance immediately at your closest medical centre, or call 112 for emergency attention.

Combatting the effects of hay fever

Hay fever is a common ailment in Spain, and you might find you suffer symptoms during your summer holiday even if you don't normally at home.

Seasonal weather combined with the heat of summer can cause moderate to high pollen levels. There are types of pollen on the Orihuela Costa that you might not be so accustomed to, such as the pollen produced by the local flora at many of the beautiful golf courses here.

You may experience symptoms similar to a common cold, including a runny nose, frequent sneezing, irritated eyes, or a sore throat.

Hay fever is likely to leave you feeling lethargic and interrupt your normal sleep pattern. In more severe cases, you may develop facial pain, loss of smell, headaches and a hot sweat.

If you suffer from hay fever during your holiday consider taking a daily morning dose of non-drowsy antihistamines, such as loratadine. If symptoms persist an additional evening dose might help, and you can purchase the medication from any local pharmacy.

If your accommodation offers air conditioning make sure to keep the windows closed when you are indoors.

If you continue to suffer from hay fever or your symptoms persist, use Clarityn eye drops or a nasal spray such as Beconase which contains a mild steroid to help reduce soreness.

Dealing with painful stings and bites

The bugs you're likely to encounter in Spain aren't that much different to those you'll be accustomed to at home. But there is a variety of insects that can bite and sting, including ants, mosquitoes, wasps and bees.

You will want to enjoy visits to the beach, the wonderful natural parks and al fresco dining while you're here in Spain. Fortunately, there are things you can do to prevent falling foul to insects.

Light a citronella candle to keep flying insects at bay whilst eating outdoors, and never walk around outside with bare feet.

Use an insect repellent, such as a cream or roll-on, or purchase wristbands containing citronella to repel biting insects. Spraying repellent around the windows in the bedrooms can help minimise mosquito bites overnight.

AccuWeather's handy forecast shows the current level of expected mosquito activity in the local area.

If you find ants inside your accommodation, use a crawling insect spray around the doors and windows to help prevent them from coming in.

Keep food covered – inside and outdoors. If you see wasps or bees near you try to stay calm and move away from them. Most insects only sting you if they feel threatened.

If someone in your party does get bitten or stung, remove any sting as soon as possible by scraping the skin with a fingernail or a credit card. Never attempt to squeeze a sting out of the skin as you may push the sting further into the tissue.

Clean the affected area with an antiseptic liquid or soap and water, and apply an ice pack to reduce swelling and pain.

Apply hydrocortisone cream or an Afterbite stick to the bite or sting, and take basic analgesia, such as paracetamol or ibuprofen to help reduce pain and inflammation.

Do not rub or scratch the area as this will increase histamine production and discomfort. Taking a regular antihistamine tablet will reduce the size of the bite and the desire to itch.

If you or a family member suffers a severe allergic reaction, such as anaphylactic shock resulting from a bite or sting, seek emergency medical attention from the local medical centre or call 112.

Preventing Athlete's Foot Infection

The warm weather in Spain means you're more likely to suffer from Athlete's Foot during your stay. To help prevent the infection putting a dampener on your holiday, wear shoes, flip-flops or sandals when walking around the pool area.

Keep your feet sweat-free by wearing footwear that allows air to circulate. Avoid shoes made from rubber or heavy synthetic materials.

Socks made from natural fabric such as cotton, or socks with a special absorbent layer are ideal, and can often be found in sports shops. Don't be tempted to wear socks again if they get or feel wet.

Wash your feet thoroughly every day with soap and take care to dry them fully, especially between your toes. Try to have more than one pair of footwear to use so you can allow shoes time to dry and air.

An antifungal shoe spray will help reduce the possibility of spores forming. Do not share towels, socks or footwear with anyone else, and change your towels every two days.

Symptoms to watch out for include itching and burning sensations on the soles of your feet and between your toes, or cracked, flaky and sore skin.

The application of an antifungal cream (available from all pharmacies) to the affected areas of the foot is the most effective way to treat an infection, paying special attention to the area between your toes.

Consider using a cooling and refreshing foot cream on your soles and ankles to help reduce swelling and tenderness.

Coping with travel sickness

Travel sickness can affect people of all ages and it's never a good start to any holiday.

Children aged between 2 and 12 years, pregnant women, and those who suffer from migraines are the most likely to be affected.

Travel sickness most often occurs because your eyes are unable to see what your body is feeling, which causes conflicting messages that confuse your brain and in turn make you feel sick, or cause sufferers to be physically sick.

To help prevent travel sickness only eat a small meal of plain food before you start your journey, avoiding fatty, greasy or heavy meals.

If you're travelling by aircraft, limit the amount you move around the cabin and pick a window seat when you book your flights that offers a clear view outside. Music can provide a helpful distraction, and don't read or spend all your time looking at your phone.

Peppermint or ginger flavours are known to reduce nausea, so always have some suitable sweets with you.

Antiemetic medications such as Stugeron or Joy-rides for children, are known to offer effective relief from travel sickness.

You can also use acupressure wristbands to help control and prevent travel sickness. They work by interrupting the messages sent from the brain to the stomach which causes the feeling of sickness.

The Zumba sessions are open to all. Eager residents and energetic holidaymakers are invited to join in the fun and get some much-needed exercise beside the spectacular Mediterranean Sea.

Classes at Playa Flamenca are organised by local fitness instructor Gwen Allan and take place year-round, weather permitting. The early morning start time ensures that it's never too hot for Zumba, even in the height of summer.

There is no requirement to book or register in advance, and the outdoor location offers plenty of room for participants to comfortably space themselves apart.

Zumba classes take place on the promenade in Playa Flamenca every Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings from 09:30. Sessions cost just €3.00 per person, and you'll find refreshments available at Surfers Bar and Grill adjacent to the promenade – the perfect place to stop for a coffee or a well-deserved sweet treat afterwards.

During the warmer summer months, classes move to a slightly earlier start time of 08:30 to make the most of the morning sunshine.

If you're still not exhausted, The Trinity Bar in Cabo Roig holds Zumba sessions on the outdoor terrace every Monday from 10:30. Hosted by Abi O Connor, the sessions are suitable for beginners and cost €4.00 per person.

Located on the site of an old pear and apple orchard, the course was designed by Jorge Guillén. He created a supremely challenging layout by making the best use of the naturally undulating Mediterranean terrain, whilst preserving the priceless native fauna that embellishes the graceful landscape.

The result is an impressive locale like no other, and Lo Romero Golf course has enjoyed an enduring programme of continuous improvements under the expert guidance of club President Pedro Jiminéz, whose focus has always been to highlight the social elements of the sport and the friendships, partnerships, and cultural exchanges developed through the team spirit of the game.

It is one of five majestic golf courses that pepper the Orihuela Costa landscape with rich expansive areas of verdant flora, each of them an oasis of natural serenity that offers an alternative to the crowded bustle associated with the busy coastline at this time of year.

Lo Romero Golf course certainly ranks as one of the finest local examples, no doubt assisted by the fastidious attention of the greenskeeping team led by Manuel Fernández, who does a remarkable job of keeping the fairways in an impeccable state of perpetual perfection.

The natural watercourses, meandering paths, surrounding hills, flora and fauna all contribute to an ultimately beautiful course that’s popular with players and visitors all year round – in and out of season.

Each hole offers something different to challenge the golfer, from dog-legs to well-defined slopes, and strategically placed flanking bunkers that require accuracy and precision driving with birdie opportunities on most holes.

Hole 10 is the longest on the Lo Romero golf course. A generously wide fairway and a flat green can prove deceptive, but with a total length exceeding a full half kilometre flanked by a dense copse of pine trees to the left and an unforgiving array of bunkers both to the right of the fairway and surrounding the green, achieving a par 5 requires prudent forethought.

Fourteen of the eighteen holes employ water hazards, and the club boasts what is possibly one of the most challenging holes on the entire Costa Blanca golf circuit: Lo Romero golf's infamous 18th hole is a par 4 played from an elevated tee which overlooks the Mar Menor and the Mediterranean Sea, down on to an island green completely surrounded by a wide waterway.

Such is the unyielding challenge of the fairway, the pretty lake surrounding the green calls for a well-struck, vehemently accurate shot onto the green to walk away on par, which will undoubtedly be etched into the golfer's memory for a lifetime.

Accessible only via a footbridge, the approach shot to the signature 18th hole named “La Isla” is rumoured to make or break a player's entire round.

Of course, you don't need to have a specific interest in golf to appreciate the benefits and sheer beauty of Lo Romero's championship golf course.

The aged pine trees that envelop the manicured fairways are rich in abundant wildlife, and it's by no means unusual for golfers to be accompanied by red squirrels.

The tufted-eared two-tone omnivorous rodents are endemic to the club and make their dreys amongst the surrounding grand pine treetops. Their comedic shenanigans are often a source of delight for players and visitors, and their presence adds credibility to Lo Romero Golf Club's commitment to preserving the environment and managing the course in a highly respectful, low-impact, and eco-friendly manner.

Spain is home to more than 600 bird species, from the regally crested Eurasian hoopoe to the aerially adept swifts that descend upon the diligently manicured fairways most evenings feeding on insects.

The course teems with active wildlife, and swifts compete for food alongside pipistrelle and long-eared bats that swarm in a spectacular natural aerial display that would be the envy of the world's finest military aerobatic teams.

Lo Romero Golf Course has an official layout difficulty of 3 (medium), an approximate tee interval of 8 minutes, and a maximum handicap of 36 for both ladies and gentlemen, making the course suitable for golfers of all abilities.

With a well-stocked ProGolf shop on-site and a central location to several other local golf courses, Lo Romero Golf Course remains a popular choice with Spanish golfers.

The La Taperia at the clubhouse serves a wide selection of breakfasts, lunches, tapas, snacks, and drinks in a more casual atmosphere. It has a covered terrace overlooking the 18th hole and spectacular and commanding vistas surrounding the restaurant.

The establishment advocates their house special, the “Tortilla de patata”, a pan-fried Spanish omelette prepared with potato and complemented with cured Serrano ham and speciality cheese. A well-stocked bar offers a wide selection of fine Spanish wines.

According to TripAdvisor, Lo Romero Golf Club is listed as the most popular tourist attraction in the Pilar de la Horadada area.

And deservingly so, with reviewers noting the course for its high maintenance levels, challenging layout, and the sheer professionalism and approachability of the groundspeople and club representatives.

One TripAdvisor reviewer from Lanark in Scotland remarked “A brilliant course with a stunning signature hole to finish. Couldn't recommend the course highly enough”. Another reviewer stated, “This has fast become my favourite course in this region of Spain. Well maintained and a good challenge for any level of golfer”.

For the 2024 season, Lo Romero Golf offers discounted green fees starting from €75.00 per person, with 18-hole twilight rounds available from €70.00. Like many other local courses, prices are lower in June, July and August, and a golf kart costs €40.00.

The course offers a website in English, Spanish and German languages; with online booking, an app for iPhone and Android mobile devices, and a webcam offering a live stream of panoramic views across the golf course.

The Arena 1000 European tour first visited Cala Bosque beach in 2018, and this summer's competition is expected to be as energetic and colourful as ever, with handball courts installed on the beach in the preceding week.

For the second year in a row, the Orihuela Costa has been selected as the venue for the final national championship round of the Arena 1000 handball tournament, the prestigious “Campeonato de España 2023 – Playas de Orihuela”.

La Zenia will host the championship from today, Friday 21st July to Sunday 23rd July 2023, with 151 national handball teams fighting for the coveted winner's title and the cash prize on offer.

The Arena 1000 Orihuela Costa tournament will precede the 2023 Spanish Championship, which will take place next weekend at La Térmica Beach in Almería.

In total, 2,200 athletes are expected to participate in this weekend's event, in both male and female competitions divided into child, cadet, youth and adult categories.

Teams will compete today until 21:30 this evening with a break in play between 14:30 and 16:00.

Saturday's schedule begins at 09:00 with a rest period between 14:30 and 16:00, with the final matches finishing at 21:30. Sunday will see participants compete from 09:00 until 14:30.

All the matches that take place on Saturday and Sunday's centre court will be streamed live on the official YouTube channel of the Royal Spanish Handball Federation.

Major sporting championship on Cala Bosque beach

The prestigious beach handball championship takes place in locations throughout the Iberian peninsular, returning to Cala Bosque in Orihuela Costa year after year.

Thousands of residents and tourists alike are expected to attend the tournament to enjoy the sporting spectacle and to support the native Spanish handball teams. The event is free of charge to attend, and grandstand seating is provided.
