One of the quirky things about taxis in the Costa Blanca is how they are permitted to operate. Licenced taxis are only allowed to pick up passengers in their licenced area. So if you travel from Orihuela Costa to Torrevieja for example, the taxi that takes you to Torrevieja cannot return to collect you for your homeward journey.

Instead, you'll need to book a separate local taxi for your return journey beforehand or call one when you're ready to head home, that's licenced to operate in Torrevieja.

It's the same for all areas of the Costa Blanca. If you're planning a special night out or a meal in a beautiful restaurant in Ciudad Quesada, any licenced Orihuela Costa taxi can take you to your destination, but only a locally booked taxi company in Ciudad Quesada can take you home.

Most local taxis accept bookings by WhatsApp (ideal if you don't possess fluent Spanish language skills), and phone numbers that begin with a “6” are mobile. Please ensure you use your leisure craft responsibly and safely, and return it to the boat hire company in the same condition as you received it. In particular:-

• Listen to the safety instructions provided by your boat hire company
• Familiarise yourself with the emergency equipment onboard
• Always wear the life-jackets provided while the boat is in motion (or as instructed)
• Do not take the craft near any other vessel or people in the water
• Stay away from marine mammals such as porpoises, whales or dolphins
• Take your rubbish home with you, never deposit rubbish in the sea
• Do not leave the permitted navigation area

Leisure boats are expensive pieces of equipment, so expect to pay a returnable deposit when taking charge of the craft. Always ask for information about deposits, fuel charges, and rental conditions prior to booking your rental boat.

The historic island of Tabarca is just an hour away from Torrevieja by boat, and after the cosmopolitan and vibrant modern ambience of the city, you will feel like you have stepped back in time.

Enjoy your journey over to the island from Torrevieja's port on a glass-bottomed boat, allowing you to view the amazing creatures and fauna of the Mediterranean Sea, including a chance to view dolphins in their natural environment.

The much-loved marine animals accompany the boats at least twice a week, and the Island of Tabarca and the surrounding inshore waters were declared a protected marine and bird reserve in 1986, the first of its kind in Spain.

Just 4 km away from Santa Pola's bleached white sandy beaches, the island of Tabarca has an interesting history, which is today reflected in the historic and weathered architecture.

During the 18th century, the island became a refuge for Barbary pirates until the Spanish king, King Charles III, decreed the fortification of Tabarca to protect against the pirates.

The remains of the wall and the fortress are still visible, and they are one of the first sights you will see as you arrive on the island.

In the heat of a Spanish summer, the milder climate of Tabarca will be a welcome relief for the day. The island is renowned for its fabulous clear waters, sandy beaches, and the coves and cliffs which surround the island's periphery.

Spanish culture, history, nature, and beautiful, warm waters

The village, which occupies the westernmost tip of the island, is laid out in a square pattern, with narrow streets lined with old fishing houses.

Take a visit to the lighthouse, observe the many rare species of birds that inhabit the island of Tabarca, and look at the amazing natural panoramic views on offer.

Find the historic buildings: the Baroque church of St Peter and Paul, the Casa del Gobernador (the old Governor's house), and explore the old fort and gatehouses. The museum is well worth a visit.

Whilst wandering around the village, stop at one of the many Barbary pirate-themed cafes, bars and restaurants to sample the traditional Spanish seafood on offer.

Local specialities include paellas and caldero (a type of Spanish fish stew). The cost of an average Menu del Dia is around 22€ per person, slightly more expensive than you'll find on the mainland.

The Island of Tabarca: great restaurants or take a picnic

Another option is to take a picnic and enjoy al-fresco dining alongside nature. The island is nearly 2 km long, and you'll always find a quiet location to lie down a blanket and open the cool box.

For those looking for a unique overnight stay, the Tabarca Boutique Hotel offers a memorable stay on the island. The 3-star hotel offers rooms with idyllic sea views, free WiFi, and private facilities. A complimentary buffet breakfast is included in the room price.

The first accolade to be bestowed upon any location in the Alicante Province, the award highlighted “Punta Falcón” at the easternmost end of the island, noting that from this location, it is possible to enjoy unobstructed starry skies during all seasons of the year.

Where does the boat from Torrevieja to Tabarca depart from?

Boats depart from Torrevieja's port adjacent to the old casino. Car parking is available in the port car park, and the vessel is adapted to meet the needs of persons with limited mobility and families with young children.

Tickets can be purchased from the port 30 minutes before the boat's departure or booked online. The cost is 27€ per adult, 19€ for children aged 3-10 years, and children 2 years old and under are free. Pets are welcome on board and travel free of charge, and food and drink are permitted.

The local attraction was initially launched by Orihuela Town Hall in association with the established Valencian passenger transport company, Bus Sigüenza. Billed as the “best way to discover Orihuela Costa”, the road train provides a unique travel experience and a practical way of getting around the coastal region.

The Orihuela Costa tourist train operates a road-going locomotive pulling a carriage with covered seating, providing shade and a generous seating capacity.

The service operates a return route starting from Campoamor and servicing points of interest eastward along the Orihuela Costa coastline, running a return service from Playa Flamenca travelling in a westerly direction.

The Orihuela Costa tourist train will operate a service throughout July and August. Tickets cost €6 per person and remain valid for an entire day of unlimited travel.

The train, or “Orihuela Tren Turístico”, will operate local transport services along the coastline, offering a super-fun way to see the sights and experience the sounds of the region.

Popular scheduled stops include Playa Flamenca beach (Cala Mosca), Zenia Boulevard shopping centre, La Zenia beach (Cala Bosque), and the beaches of Campoamor (Playa de la Glea).

With a comparatively short travel time of under an hour, the Orihuela Costa tourist train provides a great way to explore the local area even in the height of summer, as the movement of the vehicle provides a cooling Mediterranean Sea breeze even on the stillest of days.

Scheduled services from Campoamor depart at 11:00, 13:00, 16:00 and 18:00 each day from Monday to Friday.

Orihuela Costa tourist train returns for summer 2025

Return services from Playa Flamenca depart at 12:00, 14:00, 17:00 and 19:00 each day from Monday to Friday. The service finishes the season on Friday 29th August.

The tourist train connects the urbanisations of La Regia, Cabo Roig and La Zenia, which allows visitors and tourists to visit the beaches of Cala Bosque, Cala Mosca and Playa de la Glea.

It's a fun way for everyone – both residents and tourists – to get around together with the possibility of getting to know the local area and facilitates improved mobility for people of all ages.

Headquartered in Madrid, Groupo Avanza was created in 2002 amalgamating three existing public transport operators into a single corporate body.

Operating a fleet of more than 1,800 modern buses throughout the Iberian peninsula, public transport and bus services form a route from Alicante-Elche international airport to local urbanisations and communities.

A premium bus service runs between the airport and the port city of Torrevieja, with scheduled coaches linking the two destinations every day of the year including Sundays and public holidays.

The luxury coaches offer a free onboard Wifi connection for passengers and travel along the AP-7 motorway to avoid the notorious congestion on the N-332 coastal road that can cause serious delays to journeys during the summer months.

For onward travel between the airport to the train station or the city of Alicante, catch the C-6 bus to the city centre. The line operates all day, all year round and buses depart every 30 minutes. The trip takes around 25 minutes and a ticket costs €3.85.

Where to find the bus stop, what floor is the bus service on?
At Alicante airport you'll find the bus stop on Level 2 (the departures level). Exit the airport through the main terminal doors, turn right, and you'll find the bus stop past the coffee shop at the end of the concourse. Simply pay the driver as you board the bus.

Public transport on the Costa Blanca, an affordable car hire alternative

Two regular public transport services connect Torrevieja with the Orihuela Costa, using The University Hospital of Torrevieja as a connection hub.

The Pink Line “DF” provides connections between the city, Punta Prima, and Los Altos; whilst the Aqua Line “E” provides local bus services between Torrevieja, Los Altos, and Lago Jardin.

Both lines operate a regular service timetable seven days a week, with ticket prices set at a very affordable €1.55.

Two special public transport services supplement connections around the local area, with buses serving stops between Torrevieja Hospital and Zenia Boulevard shopping centre, and a separate southbound coastal service covering communities between Zenia Boulevard and the health centre in Aguamarina.

Special service bus routes operate only Monday through Friday, with no scheduled services for the weekends or public holidays. The service runs year-round with buses every 90 minutes throughout July and August.

The Costa Azul app is available from the Google Play store. The handy app shows the location of all bus stops on a Google Map, a route map for each bus line, and indicates live expected wait times at each stop.

Explore the Spanish culture of Orihuela, reached within an hour

A bus service connects the coast with the municipal city of Orihuela and the Orihuela-Miguel Hernández railway station. Locally, the route starts at Zenia Boulevard shopping centre visiting the two cities of Torrevieja and Orihuela, with ticket prices costing just €1.55 for the hour-long journey.

City-bound public transport services operate three scheduled return routes from Monday to Friday (excluding public holidays), and the off-season service runs from September to July each year.

The bus service from Torrevieja to Ciudad Quesada.
A limited bus service operates routes north of Torrevieja, connecting the city with the urbanisations of Ciudad Quesada and Benijofar. Buses depart Torrevieja adjacent to the Hotel Fontana Plaza at 07:00, 10:00, 14:00 and 18:00. Return services depart from the arches in Ciudad Quesada at 10:50, 12:30, 18:15 and 20:20.

The local roads around the Costa Blanca are very safe, but some rules in Spain might be different to the traffic regulations you're used to at home.

You must have your driving licence with you at all times

All drivers in Spain must carry their driving licence with them at all times whilst driving a car. Motorists from the UK should note that they can still use their British driving licence to hire a car when they're here, and an International Driving Permit is not a legal requirement for driving in Spain.

Road users who cannot produce their driving licence on request by a Police officer may face delays or even the possibility of being detained, so don't get behind the wheel of a car without your licence.

It's easy to just “pop to the shops” and forget to take your driving licence with you, but you might find it significantly less convenient if you leave home without it.

Driving a car with cyclists and bicycles on the road

On an open road, you must leave at least 1.5 metres (5 feet) between your car and a cyclist when overtaking. You can cross a solid white line in the centre of the road to overtake a bicycle if it is necessary to do so, if you can see that the road ahead is clear, and if no other vehicles are on the opposite carriageway.

It is not unusual to find large groups of avid cyclists riding around the roads of the Orihuela Costa, but Spanish road legislation treats groups of riders as a single unit. Think of a group of cyclists no differently than a large articulated lorry or heavy goods vehicle.

This is an especially important point on roundabouts, where, as soon as the first cyclist has entered the roundabout the entire group of riders now have the right of way to enter the roundabout, and other road users must give way until the last cycle in the group has passed through the intersection safely before proceeding.

Driving in Spain, using roundabouts on the Orihuela Costa

Roundabouts are one of the most often misunderstood and seemingly confusing elements of the Spanish road network, and using a roundabout improperly can lead to a serious accident or a fine.

National legislation regards roundabouts as nothing more than a curved, dual-carriageway road with junctions. This means that traffic can turn left, or go all the way around a roundabout in the outer lane – without indicating.

This can be a nightmare for drivers unfamiliar with negotiating roundabouts across the Orihuela Costa region, but there is a simple solution.

The law states that you must always exit a roundabout in the right-hand outer-most lane. If you drive in the inner lane beside a car in the outer lane, bear in mind that the car to your right has the right of way and may continue all the way around the roundabout.

Best advice is to stay in the right-hand lane when using a roundabout, use roundabouts with great care and at low speed, use your left-turn indicator as a courtesy to other road users when turning left, and always be ready to stop your vehicle if you encounter a driver who is not as familiar with the rules of the road here.

But it's not just holidaymakers that want to know the current airport parking prices. Whether living here full-time or part-time, international residents often need to leave their car at the airport for varying periods throughout the year.

Fortunately, many local businesses have stepped in to fill the void, specialising in short-stay and long-term airport parking. Many companies offer better prices than you'll find on the airport concourse.

We've collated previous customer recommendations from the La Zenia Community Facebook Group, to bring you the most recommended alternative off-site airport parking services for summer 2023.

Parking at Alicante airport, how much does it cost?

Parking at Alicante airport is managed by AENA, a Spanish Government-owned airport and logistics management company. The cost of parking one car in the long-stay general car park at Alicante airport for a week in August 2023 costs €70. The price is valid for arrivals booking in advance, and the price increases to €78 without pre-booked reservation.

Two weeks of on-site parking in August costs €88 for pre-booked cars and €147 for arrivals without a reservation in place. Two weeks of low-season airport parking in November cost the same, and prices don't tend to vary throughout the year.

Pre-booked car parking prices have increased substantially over the summer, with a week in August booked before July costing just €40. That same week booked today costs €70, an increase of 75%. A two week advanced booking that used to cost €51 will cost €88 today, an increase in excess of 70%.

Long-stay parking prices at Murcia International airport are somewhat cheaper, with a pre-booked week costing €34, a fortnight costs €42, a month costs €117, and for three months the charge would amount to €427.

Simply for comparison, parking your car at Alicante airport's long-stay car park for an entire year would cost €2,356 if booked and paid for in advance, and the cost for parking without reservation or pre-payment is positively eye-watering.

Star Parking Alicante

Star Parking Alicante offer a choice of open or covered off-site airport parking, free exterior car washing, secure long-term vehicle storage, and unlimited meet and greets for customers that take out an annual parking contract.

A 12-month airport parking plan costs €300 or €480 for car owners that prefer to specify undercover parking. The company offers off-site secure indoor parking at Alicante airport for €790 per year per car, and arranges ITV tests for an additional cost.

Specialising in long-term parking of all types and sizes of vehicles including vans, campervans, and motorhomes, Star Parking Alicante offers online booking, a website in English, Spanish, and Russian; and a parking service that operates 24-hours a day.

Plane Parking S.L

Plane Parking provides short-term and long-term parking solutions for both Alicante Airport and the newer Región de Murcia International Airport in Corvera, with a combined 50,000 metres of secure parking space for travellers and residents.

Uniquely, they are the only airport parking company to offer a dual-parking contract to frequent visitors, giving their customers the choice of flying into Alicante or Murcia airports. For a nominal additional charge, they'll even transfer your vehicle for you.

Long-term annual parking prices at Alicante airport

EuroParking Alicante Airport

EuroParking offers a basic long-term airport parking service for just €285 per year with the option to upgrade to unlimited transfers for an additional €50, and a shuttle bus service with a dedicated meeting point just outside Alicante airport's main terminal building.

Their meet and greet service costs €325 per year with an annual contract, and contracted parking prices for indoor covered spaces start at €875 a year, rising to €925 annually including a monthly meet and greet service.

The company provides 2,500 secure parking spaces, charging stations for hybrid or battery electric vehicles, car-washing and ITV services, and a website with online booking and management of your vehicle while you´re away.

Top Gear Mobility

Top Gear Mobility specialises in long-term parking at Alicante airport, with packages for frequent travellers and homeowners on the Costa Blanca. All packages include pick-up and drop-off at the terminal and unlimited transfers.

Prices start at €300 per annum for “meet and greet” outside parking, with short stay holiday parking from €30 per week. All annual contract plans also include complimentary exterior washing of your car.

With a 24-hour round-the-clock service and an advertised transfer time of just one minute between their secure compound and Alicante airport's main terminal, they offer one of the fastest ways to make sure your inbound and outbound journeys go smoothly.

One of Umbrella Parking's unique features is the ability to park your own car and take your car keys with you when you leave your vehicle. Owners have the certainty of knowing exactly where their car is and that nobody else can drive it in their absence.

Long-term parking prices start at €270 per year for open-air car parking, €470 per annum for covered parking, and €550 per year for indoor parking. Short-term parking prices start at €12 for 2 days or €24 for one complete week.

Short-stay Alicante airport parking for holidays and weekend breaks

Seguro Parking, Alicante and Murcia airport

Specialising in short-stay and long-stay car parking, Seguro Parking offer services for residents and holidaymakers at locations adjacent to both Alicante airport and Murcia-Corvera airport too.

Short-stay parking for one-week costs €41 and two weeks costs €55 at either airport. Long-term contracted parking prices for a year cost €369 at Alicante airport and a dual contract for both Alicante and Murcia airports costs €455 per annum with a nominal €10 car transfer fee.
