The mammoth National Beach Volleyball Circuit is the official event of the Royal Spanish Volleyball Federation (RFEVB).

Playa Cala Bosque will once again be transformed into one of the South Costa Blanca's most dynamic sporting stages, as the beach hosts a major international sports festival combining elite competition and grassroots participation.

Almost 100 competitors will fight for the championship and a 10,000 € grand cash prize, with participants from the men's and women's categories competing at this stage of the national competition.

Playa Cala Bosque to host two sporting events

The 2026 edition is structured around two headline competitions, each delivering high-performance sport. The main event takes place from Thursday 4th June until Sunday 7th June.

This 3rd stage of the 3-star national beach volleyball tournament represents a key stepping stone within the Spanish volleyball system, with athletes competing in the two previous stages hosted in Madrid and Marbella beforehand.

The following weekend, from Friday 12th June until Sunday 14th June, Orihuela Costa steps up to a global level with the arrival of the ITF Beach Tennis World Tour, hosting an international tournament under the supervision of the International Tennis Federation (ITF) and the Royal Spanish Tennis Federation (RFET).

Both events will feature a central stadium with spectator seating, food trucks, leisure zones, and a hospitality area.

Thousands of residents and tourists alike are expected to attend the tournaments to enjoy the sporting spectacle and to support the native Spanish teams.

Every golf course offers a variety of world-class facilities, from fine dining restaurants to casual bars and cafes. It's a wonderful way to spend a relaxing day away from the hustle and bustle of the Orihuela Costa's beaches, areas which can be particularly busy during the height of summer.

Villamartin Golf Course is the closest to La Zenia. It was one of the first to be established in the local area and is one of only four local courses to be included in the list of Top 100 Golf Courses in Spain for 2026.

This beautiful course has welcomed golfers since 1972, with its meticulously landscaped greens and fairways offering a challenging round in all seasons.

Its close proximity to Villamartin Plaza means visitors have plenty of high-quality dining options, and a restaurant on the course itself offers spectacular views across the fairways.

Real Club de Golf Campoamor Resort, Campoamor

One of the larger golf courses with a 6,277 m round and par 72, players can enjoy a course whose lawns, neatly manicured to the highest standards, are only enhanced by the lush vegetation and fauna.

The open layout is an easy walk with minimal traffic interference, and whilst a buggy is available, it is unnecessary for most able-bodied players.

Originally opened in 1988, the golf course has seen perpetual development and upgrades to keep the club at the leading edge of the sport.

Las Ramblas Golf, Campoamor

Las Ramblas golf course is built into a beautiful landscape of Mediterranean pines and natural ravines. Although not particularly long, its rugged landscape and beautiful trees make the game more enjoyable.

The greens are large and generous, featuring a combination of fast and gentle slopes. What the course lacks in on-site facilities (comparable to other local courses), it compensates for with its unmatched natural beauty.

Lo Romero Golf, Pinar de Campoverde

This relative newcomer to the Costa Blanca golf circuit only opened officially in 2008 after a long development period. Technically located in Pilar de la Horadada, its proximity to Orihuela Costa and high ranking in the 2026 list of Spain's Best Golf Courses make it worthy of inclusion.

The natural watercourses, meandering paths, surrounding hills, and Mediterranean flora and fauna all contribute to an ultimately beautiful course that’s popular all year round, both in and out of season.

And one feature you probably won’t find anywhere else on the Orihuela Costa is the Buggy Bar; a custom-fitted Pro Golf Cart that provides cold drinks and light snacks to keep golfers refreshed on the fairway.

Las Colinas Golf and Country Club, Campoamor

Located just 15 km inland from La Zenia, Las Colinas is one of the finest golf courses to emerge in Europe recently and ranks 20th in Golf's Top 100 list of Spanish courses for 2026.

This inflatable obstacle course features various attractions designed for children to have a blast jumping, climbing, and sliding into the sea. It's positively huge, and guaranteed to wring every last drop of energy from your young ones.

It's great value, with a 30 minute session costing just 8 € and a schedule from 11:00 until 19:00 each day. There's more good news for parents too, as children under 7 years old must be accompanied by an adult. Ah, shame.

Pedalos, family-friendly fun in Orihuela Costa

These creature-themed, people-powered, super cruisers pack a lot of fun into a tiny space. You'll find them parked on the beaches of Cala La Caleta in Cabo Roig, Cala Bosque in La Zenia, or Playa de la Glea in Dehesa de Campoamor.

The boats come complete with 4 seats and a slide, and cost 24 € to rent for 60 minutes of exhausting but rewarding seafaring fun. All ages are welcome to pedalo, but children under 14 must be accompanied by an adult at all times.

Hire a kayak on the beach in Dehesa de Campoamor

Kayaking is an activity suitable for all ages, perfect for nature and sea lovers. There are single-seat and double kayaks available at Playa de la Glea, so you can enjoy the experience with children without worrying about them getting tired.

Kayak hire is available daily from 11:00 to 19:00 and costs 18 € for a single kayak or 20 € for a double-seat kayak. Rental lasts for an hour, and instructors are on hand to explain the basics of kayak rental and safety rules.

Stand up paddleboard hire at Playa Cala La Caleta

Paddleboarding is super-fun and easy to master. The SUP boards provide a relaxing way to enjoy the Mediterranean Sea in a safe location at Cabo Roig's exquisite beach, and it's a great activity for couples and families too.

The “Cama Loca” Crazy Bed boat ride in Campoamor

Don't expect a good night's sleep in this bed. The adrenaline-fuelled wild ride will have you hanging on as a speedboat pulls you along at full throttle. The inflatable water toy slides and spins, guaranteeing laughter and excitement.

Standup paddleboarding, often abbreviated to “SUP”, is a water sport born from surfing with roots originating in the Pacific island of Hawaii. Stand up paddle boarders stand on boards that float on the water's surface, using a paddle to propel themselves through the water.

Paddle boarding tends to be a more relaxed pastime compared to the adrenalin-fuelled wave-chasing sport of surfing, and paddleboards are wider and longer than surfboards.

Crucially, unlike surf boards, paddle boards are easier to master and ideally suited to beginners and families because they're much more naturally stable than their surfing counterparts.

Located on the site of an old pear and apple orchard, the course was designed by Jorge Guillén. He created a supremely challenging layout by making the best use of the naturally undulating Mediterranean terrain, whilst preserving the priceless native fauna that embellishes the graceful landscape.

The result is an impressive locale like no other, and Lo Romero Golf course has enjoyed an enduring programme of continuous improvements under the expert guidance of club President Pedro Jiminéz, whose focus has always been to highlight the social elements of the sport and the friendships, partnerships, and cultural exchanges developed through the team spirit of the game.

Each hole offers something different to challenge the golfer, from dog-legs to well-defined slopes, and strategically placed flanking bunkers that require accuracy and precision driving with birdie opportunities on most holes.

Hole 10 is the longest on the Lo Romero golf course. A generously wide fairway and a flat green can prove deceptive, but with a total length exceeding a full half kilometre flanked by a dense copse of pine trees to the left and an unforgiving array of bunkers both to the right of the fairway and surrounding the green, achieving a par 5 requires prudent forethought.

Fourteen of the eighteen holes employ water hazards, and the club boasts what is possibly one of the most challenging holes on the entire Costa Blanca golf circuit: Lo Romero golf's infamous 18th hole is a par 4 played from an elevated tee which overlooks the Mar Menor and the Mediterranean Sea, down on to an island green completely surrounded by a wide waterway.

Such is the unyielding challenge of the fairway, the pretty lake surrounding the green calls for a well-struck, vehemently accurate shot onto the green to walk away on par, which will undoubtedly be etched into the golfer's memory for a lifetime.

Accessible only via a footbridge, the approach shot to the signature 18th hole named “La Isla” is rumoured to make or break a player's entire round.

The aged pine trees that envelop the manicured fairways are rich in abundant wildlife, and it's by no means unusual for golfers to be accompanied by red squirrels.

The course teems with active wildlife, and swifts compete for food alongside pipistrelle and long-eared bats that swarm in a spectacular natural aerial display that would be the envy of the world's finest military aerobatic teams.

The Arena 1000 European tour first visited Cala Bosque beach in 2018, and this summer's competition is expected to be as energetic and colourful as ever, with handball courts installed on the beach in the preceding week.

For the second year in a row, the Orihuela Costa has been selected as the venue for the final national championship round of the Arena 1000 handball tournament, the prestigious “Campeonato de España 2023 – Playas de Orihuela”.

La Zenia will host the championship from today, Friday 21st July to Sunday 23rd July 2023, with 151 national handball teams fighting for the coveted winner's title and the cash prize on offer.

The Arena 1000 Orihuela Costa tournament will precede the 2023 Spanish Championship, which will take place next weekend at La Térmica Beach in Almería.

In total, 2,200 athletes are expected to participate in this weekend's event, in both male and female competitions divided into child, cadet, youth and adult categories.

Teams will compete today until 21:30 this evening with a break in play between 14:30 and 16:00.

Saturday's schedule begins at 09:00 with a rest period between 14:30 and 16:00, with the final matches finishing at 21:30. Sunday will see participants compete from 09:00 until 14:30.

All the matches that take place on Saturday and Sunday's centre court will be streamed live on the official YouTube channel of the Royal Spanish Handball Federation.

Patricia Menárguez, the Councillor for Sports at Orihuela Town Hall, announced the return of the competition at an official presentation at the Higher Sports Council in the Spanish capital city of Madrid.

The Councillor stated “It is an immense honour to host the Spanish Beach Handball Championship. This is magnificent news for our locale, for those of us who work to promote sports. Orihuela is a city rich in cultural and historical heritage, appreciated for its natural environment and its beaches since we are the second city in Spain with the most Blue Flags.”

The Arena 1000 European tour first visited Cala Bosque beach in 2018 and this year's competition will be bigger than ever, with twelve handball courts set to be installed on the beach in the weeks preceding the event.

For the first time, the Orihuela Costa has been selected as the venue for the final national championship rounds of the Arena 1000 handball tournament, the prestigious “Campeonato de España 2022 – Playas de Orihuela”.

La Zenia will host the championship from Thursday 28th July to Sunday 31st July 2022 with 250 national handball teams fighting for the coveted winner's title and the cash prize on offer.

The competition starts in Torrox, moving on to Sanxenxo, Nazaré and Almería, before the final games begin on the golden sands of Cala Bosque Beach. 3,600 participants are expected to take part in the competition and stands will accommodate up to 1,200 spectators each day.

The tournament is predicted to generate bookings for 12,000 overnight stays in the region over the four days, and lead to a significant economic injection that will directly benefit the businesses and people of the Orihuela Costa community.

The Winter Beach program was initially launched in 2017 in response to local demand for water sports and social leisure activities throughout the year, at the selected location of Cabo Roig´s idyllic La Caleta beach.

The beach provides the ideal location, meeting the stringent requirements for a family-friendly environment, with safe and clean Mediterranean waters, accessibility for all, the service of a beach bar year-round, and an extensive cove-shaped open beachfront comprised of golden sands.

The group sporting calendar was suspended last year due to the pandemic but returned in the springtine, and the town hall has confirmed a calendar of activities that start now and take place every weekend until the start of the Christmas period.

Previous iterations of The Winter Beach included group aerobic activities such as yoga, body balance, Aquagym, and Zumba, alongside organised workshops and games for children that aimed to raise awareness and educate in the conservation, respect and protection of the environment.

Water sports on offer included paddleboarding, canoeing, snorkelling, and diving for beginners, but public health restrictions in force this past spring, limited the activities on offer.

However, with the gradual easing of public safety measures and the lifting of limitations on groups of people, “The Winter Beach” program for this year is back to full strength, with group activities returning to the schedule – whilst maintaining safe spaces between participants.

Nonetheless, the council have laid on complimentary paddle boarding and canoeing, in addition to group pilates sessions and yoga on the beach at La Caleta each weekend.

The Town Hall is also offering free surfing classes from La Zenia´s Cala Cerrada beach on Saturday 23rd October and Saturday 30th October, with the 90-minute classes starting at 10:00.

The beach is naturally adapted to offer the conditions surfers require, and Cala Cerrada is the only beach on Orihuela Costa officially certified for surfing.

Free group exercise and sporting activities on Orihuela Costa beaches

The free activities have been planned for the weekends and culminate later this winter on Sunday 12th December 2021, with everyone encouraged to participate and enjoy the Orihuela Costa´s wonderful beaches.

Paddleboard sessions take place on La Caleta beach every Saturday from 10:00 until 11:00, with canoeing from 11:00 until 12:30 every Sunday.

Yoga on the beach also takes place on Saturday mornings from 10:00 until 11:00, and group Pilates sessions happen on Sunday mornings between 10:00 and 11:00.

Complimentary organised children's activities take place on Cabo Roig beach on both days over the weekend for two hours between 10:30 and 12:30.

Last years event was cancelled but the sporting spectacular returns to the 2021 social calendar, and more than a thousand Spanish and international athletes will gather on La Zenia beach to participate in one of Europe´s most important handball contests.

The announcement of the tournament was made earlier this month at a ceremony in Madrid attended by the Mayor of Orihuela, Emilio Bascuñana, the Councillor for Sports, Victor Bernabéu, the General Director of the National Sports Council, Albert Soler, and the President of the Royal Spanish Handball Federation, Francisco Blázquez.

Part of the European Beach Handball Tour organised by the European Handball Federation, the Arena 1000 Orihuela Costa tournament is preceded by ongoing events this past weekend in Las Palmas, the capital city of Gran Canaria.

The prestigious beach handball tournament takes place in locations throughout the Iberian peninsular, with both male and female athletes competing in the three different skill groups: senior, youth and cadet.

The top-ranking Spanish national teams will be hoping for a considerable win in La Zenia this weekend to increase their chances of landing the coveted champion's trophy.

The competition was last held on the Orihuela Costa in 2019 and the event attracted a large audience both locally and online, where Teledeporte reached 200,000 viewers through live streaming the event over 20 hours during the La Zenia beach competition, with over a million interactions on social networks.

The tour attracts major corporate sponsorship from large commercial enterprises, including the Spanish national mail carrier Correos, banking group Grupo Santander, Avis car rental, freight and passenger train operator, Renfe, and Spain's Iberdrola power and utility company.

It's an important opportunity for Orihuela Costa to promote itself to potential domestic tourists over the forthcoming summer season, and detailed highlights of the local area feature prominently in promotional videos and online media.

The Arena 1000 Orihuela Costa tournament is being organised by Spain's Real Federación Española de Balonmano, the national association that manages and promotes the sport throughout the country.

La Zenia beach transformed into a centre for summer sports

Handball courts will be installed on Playa de Cala Bosque in La Zenia during the forthcoming week, with the competition commencing on Friday 25th June at 10:00. The second circuit round will take place on Saturday, with the final local stage on Sunday 27th June 2021 from 10:00 until 14:30.

The Arena 1000 competition moves on to Nazaré, followed by a successive tournament in Gijón, before heading to Playa del Palmeral in Almeria for the finals during the weekend of 6th to 8th August 2021.

Thousands of residents and international tourists alike are expected to attend the tournament to enjoy the sporting spectacle over the weekend, turning out to support their Spanish handball teams.

The popular programme of beach activities returns to Cabo Roig´s La Caleta beach for the fourth edition of the sponsored sporting activities, with weekly events taking place on the beach each Sunday.

Ramón López Cabrera, the Councillor of Beaches for Orihuela Town Hall, announced on Friday that the fourth iteration of The Winter Beach programme would offer a total of 32 beach activities.

All activities are provided completely free of charge, and each has been carefully selected to ensure suitability for all ages and every level of sporting and physical competence.

The Winter Beach: Playa La Caleta de Cabo Roig

The Winter Beach program was initially launched last year in response to local demand for water sports and social leisure activities throughout the year, at the selected location of Cabo Roig's La Caleta beach.

Councillor Cabrera stated, “La Caleta beach in Cabo Roig was chosen as this season's location as it is most suited to The Winter Beach programme, it can support more attendees off-season, and it has a beach bar service open throughout the year.”

The council are keen to challenge the conventional assumption that Orihuela's beaches are purely seasonal, and to demonstrate the range of possibilities that the beauty spots offer residents and visitors to the local area throughout the year.

La Caleta beach meets the stringent requirements for a family-friendly environment, with safe and clean Mediterranean swimming waters, accessibility for all, the service of a Chiringuito beach bar year-round, and an extensive welcoming beachfront comprised of golden sands.

The Winter Beach program is designed for all ages, developed with the precept that any person, any couple, or any family, can simply head for the beach and participate in the activities of that day in a socially active and safe environment.

Family-friendly beach activities: the fourth edition

Group aerobic activities such as yoga, body balance, and Zumba, will be organised alongside workshops and games for children that will aim to raise awareness and educate on the conservation, respect, and protection of the environment.

Water sports on offer will include paddle-boarding, canoeing, and diving for beginners, all provided free of charge.

Paddleboard sessions and canoeing will alternate each Sunday from 09:30 – 11:00, whist beach sports, group aerobics, and children's workshops will take place every Sunday between 11:00 and midday.

Diving for beginners will be offered on Saturdays with two dates in October and two in November.

The diving sessions take place from 10:00 this coming Saturday 19th October, and Saturday 26th October, with two further dates the following month: Saturday 2nd November and Saturday 9th November.

The programme runs every Sunday from now (October) until the final scheduled session on Sunday 7th December 2019.
