Rising dramatically above a turquoise reservoir and surrounded by the rugged peaks of the Marina Baixa mountains, Castell de Guadalest is one of the most extraordinary destinations in Alicante Province.

Frequently ranked among Spain's most beautiful villages, this historic mountain settlement attracts visitors from across Europe, with visitors keen to experience its remarkable scenery, medieval heritage, and stunning vistas.

Located 126 km northeast of Orihuela Costa, Guadalest makes an excellent day trip for residents and holidaymakers. The journey typically takes around 1 hr 43 mins by car, with the final approach road providing some of the most impressive inland views in the Costa Blanca region.

The history of Guadalest Castle in Alicante

Guadalest's origins date back more than a thousand years to the period of Muslim rule in eastern Spain. During the 11th century, the Moors recognised the strategic value of this narrow rocky ridge overlooking the fertile Guadalest Valley, and built the Castle of San José as part of a defensive network protecting the region.

The fortress, combined with the sheer cliffs, made Guadalest one of the most naturally fortified settlements in the Kingdom of Valencia. Small farming communities gradually developed around the castle, cultivating almonds, olives, and vineyards that continue to shape the surrounding landscape today.

The village became part of Christian Spain in 1245 during the Reconquista, when King James I of Aragon captured the area. Rather than losing its importance, Guadalest continued to serve as a strategic military stronghold, later becoming the centre of the Barony, and subsequently the Marquisate, of Guadalest.

Over the centuries, influential noble families governed the settlement from within its fortified walls. The elegant Casa Orduña, which still stands today, was built following a devastating earthquake in 1644 and became the residence of the family responsible for administering the estate on behalf of the Spanish Crown.

San José Castle, standing since the 11th century

Wars and changing trade routes gradually reduced Guadalest's military significance, but the village never lost its character. Its medieval street layout, stone houses and dramatic hilltop setting have been carefully preserved, earning it recognition as one of Alicante's most important historic villages.

Today, Castell de Guadalest attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors each year, not only for its impressive castle and panoramic views over the turquoise reservoir, but also as a living reminder of ancient Spain, long before the region became one of Europe's most popular holiday destinations.

Visitors enter the historic centre of the village through the “Portal de Sant Josep”, a tunnel carved directly into the rock before emerging into a hidden world of cobbled streets, stone houses and panoramic viewpoints.

A wide path leads to the entrance tunnel, but Guadalest is generally not suitable for people with mobility limitations, families with push-chairs, or wheelchair users. Streets are laid with traditional, uneven cobblestones, and higher attractions are accessed via a sequence of steep metal stairs and stone steps.

What's there to do and see in Guadalest?

Guadalest's main attraction is the spectacular panoramic views from the main square. Visitors can view the vivid turquoise waters of the Guadalest Reservoir 595 metres below (almost 2,000 feet), framed by the dramatic peaks of the Sierra de Aitana (1,558 metres), Serrella, and Xortà mountain ranges.

At the highest point, visitors can explore San José Castle – the fortress ruins, the old cemetery, and sections of the medieval defensive walls, with numerous viewpoints providing excellent photographic opportunities.

The “Museu de la Tortura” (Museum of Medieval Torture) houses a collection of reconstructed torture and execution devices used across Europe during the Middle Ages and the period of the Spanish Inquisition.

Another important attraction is Casa Orduña, the historic residence of the influential Orduña family, who served as governors of the fortress and administrators for the Marquises of Guadalest.

Restaurants and bars, where to eat in Guadalest

Despite its relatively small size, Guadalest offers a range of restaurants, cafés and traditional bars. Local gastronomy focuses on authentic mountain cuisine, including rice dishes, stuffed peppers, roasted vegetables, rabbit with garlic aioli, and a traditional local wheat stew known as “Olleta de Blat”.

Popular eateries include El Mirador de Guadalest, Pizzeria El Patio Origen, Cafe Bar Les Penyes, and Restaurante La Petita, serving a variety of traditional Spanish croquettes, tapas, and local delicacies.

Restaurante L'Hort is deserving of a special mention. This long-established family-run restaurant has been serving traditional Alicante mountain cuisine for more than 30 years, earning a reputation for authentic regional recipes, warm hospitality and one of the finest dining locations in the village.

With a spectacular mountain terrace, Restaurante L'Hort overlooks the Mediterranean countryside and coastline of Altea, some 20 kms southeast of this epic location. The extensive menu caters for vegan palates, with a special vegan variant of the wheat stew Guadalest is known for.

How to get to El Castell de Guadalest

The easiest way to get to the Castell de Guadalest is by car via the AP-7 or N-332 coastal road. The AP-7 is a toll road, so charges may apply to your journey, whilst the N-332 is a free national highway. There are three large car parks in the centre of town, providing ample free car parking and easy access.

Alternatively, Viajes Rosa Tours in Ciudad Quesada offers coach-based day trips to both Algar Waterfalls and Guadalest every Monday throughout the year, with online booking, local pickup points in Orihuela Costa, and return ticket prices from just 17 € per person.

Located on the rooftop of a local shopping centre in Playa Flamenca, Mini Golf La Mosca offers beautiful elevated views over the Mediterranean Sea.

The Big Adventure Mini Golf | Lomas de Cabo Roig

Just a few minutes by car from La Zenia, The Big Adventure Mini Golf comprises a mini golf course, a garden centre, and its own complete bar.

Kulturas Bar, located adjacent to the golf course, serves various soft drinks and a full bar service, including a range of Spanish Tapas and cocktails.

The mini golf course is floodlit for night-time use and is open daily from 09:30 until late.

La Chismosa Pool, Bar and Restaurant | Playa Flamenca

La Chismosa offers a “miniature” mini golf course ideal for younger children or novice golf fans.

But as the name suggests, this venue offers much more, such as a fully stocked bar with a covered terrace and a large free-form swimming pool to enjoy during the summer months (opens June 2026).

It's a firm family favourite, with a pocket-friendly menu of light bites and poolside food that appeals to young and mature palates.

Murphy's Irish Pub | La Zenia

Not technically a mini golf venue, but particularly noteworthy nonetheless. Murphy's Irish Pub offers a small but charming mini golf course located adjacent to the venue in the Via Park II commercial centre, just opposite Zenia Boulevard.

The tiny course sets the entire theme for the authentic Irish pub and visitors can enjoy a round of mini golf whilst sampling the food and drink on offer.

Part of the Sunrise chain of restaurants, Murphy's Irish Pub in La Zenia is open seven days a week from 10:00 until late.

Pitcher and Putt | Playa Flamenca

One of the latest venues to grace the Orihuela Costa mini-golf scene, Pitcher and Putt opened in the summer of 2023. Lovingly crafted, the course occupies a premium location opposite the Citrus Centre in Playa Flamenca.

Sporting a challenging 18-hole course and a family-friendly bar with a terrace, a game costs €6 per person (children under 6 years play for free) and signature pitchers of Sangria cost just €12. A full bar service is available serving a variety of beverages and soft drinks.

Pitcher and Putt is open six days a week from 12:00 until 18:00 during the year (closed Monday). Extended summer hours until 22:00.

Lo Rufete Multi-Aventura Park | San Miguel de Salinas

Spending your entire holiday at Lo Rufete Adventure Park would be all too easy. There's so much to do here, from horse riding to quad-biking and … mini golf!

Occupying a sliver of land in the centre of Torrevieja, Mini Golf Las Salinas is delectably Spanish and packed with interesting and quirky features.

The spectacular adventure golf venue opened in January 2019, and no expense has been spared to create an aesthetically pleasing and challenging environment with water features, palm trees, and various ornate decorations.

You'll find this family-friendly hidden gem just 25 minutes north of La Zenia by car. The popular golfing hotspot offers a complete 18-hole miniature championship course with a round costing just 5,00€ per adult and 4,50€ for children under 12 years.

A bar and restaurant offers a daily menu of light bites and refreshments on-site, and a special three-course Sunday roast dinner for just 14,95€ per person at the weekend.

Quesada Mini Golf is open daily from 09:30 until 20:30 during the spring and summer seasons. The kitchen serves food from 10:00 until 15:00.

La Manga Adventure Golf | Cabo de Palos

La Manga Adventure Golf is one of the most recent additions to the Spanish mini-golf circuit, with the venue undergoing a complete remodel in 2020.

Adult golf prices cost 11€ per game with a reduced price of 6€ for children. Special deals and discounts are available with combined golf and meal packages, and discounted rates are offered for groups of 20 players or more.

Located 40 minutes south of La Zenia, La Manga Adventure Golf is open daily from 10:30 until 22:00.

Tucked away in a small corner of La Funeta Commercial Centre, rainy-day parents will discover a jungle-themed children's oasis replete with a play village, a large 3-tier soft-play adventure zone, a video game zone, a Lego wall, and a host of free-play toys for younger patrons.

Play Cafe combines a family-friendly casual dining cafe with integrated playtime experiences and specialises in fresh fruit smoothies and milkshakes. The venue has been commended for its upbeat setting and decor, with previous visitors noting the spotlessly clean environment and attentive, friendly staff.

An adult's menu offers a selection of healthy light bites such as paninis and a choice of sandwiches throughout the day, while the kids' menu focuses on food more acceptable to a younger audience, such as hot dogs, pasta, and a variety of cakes and cookies.

Say Yes to Play, Los Dolses

When it's soaking outside, there's plenty of fun to be had at Say Yes to Play in Los Dolses. The venue offers a two-storey soft play zone, traditional toys, and an expansive air-conditioned indoor play area for younger children.

Family-friendly food is served in the cafeteria, including speciality pancakes. The venue caters for birthday parties and offers special events during the summer holidays.

Dream Park, Playa Flamenca

Located in the Flamenca Beach commercial centre, you'll find Dream Park. The venue caters to younger residents and holidaymakers with soft play areas, ball pits, an indoor playground, and a small climbing area with thickly padded crash-mats suited to aspiring future mountaineers.

Regularly organised activities include face painting, craft workshops, magic shows, and musical entertainment.

Side Street Café, La Zenia

This family-friendly addition to the Orihuela Costa area guarantees fun for younger children whatever the weather. A dedicated play space provides plenty of fun for little people come rain or shine, and the café menu caters specifically to younger tastes.

Bigger people aren't forgotten though, and the venue offers a mouth-watering selection of handmade beef burgers, tasty breakfasts, cakes and sweet treats. A fully-stocked freezer is packed to the brim with lollies and ice creams to satisfy the sweet-tooth of diners of all ages.

Located in the Costa commercial centre, Side Street Café is open every day from 09:00 until 16:00 throughout the year.

Restaurante de Bassus, La Zenia

This established local restaurant has made a name for itself in Orihuela Costa, serving an extensive Bavarian menu and speciality beer brewed on-site in a micro-brewery.

But foot-long Bratwurst isn't the only thing this family-favourite restaurant has going on, and de Bassus sports a dedicated children's zone replete with an indoor soft play area.

The German-inspired venue is open every day throughout the year, from midday until midnight. Particularly popular during busy periods, booking is highly recommended at peak times or during the summer.

Water parks are a family-friendly favourite for many tourists and visitors to our little part of Spain, but the attractions offer such different experiences that it's worth doing your homework before you commit to buying a ticket.

So here's what's available this summer 2026, with seasonal opening times, the latest ticket prices for all the Costa Blanca water parks, and handy Google Maps to get you there.

Aquopolis Torrevieja | Torrevieja

The largest of the water parks in the south Costa Blanca area, Aquopolis Torrevieja packs 18 wet n' wild rides into one thrilling day out. Charmed Lake, mini zig-zag, and the mini-park provide plenty of entertainment for younger children, while Speed, Boomerang, and Kamikaze provide high-octane thrills for older kids.

Favourites such as Hydro-Racer, the Rapids, the Black Hole, and a wave pool cement Aquopolis's position as a firm summer favourite when the heat is on, and a VIP Zone offers a privileged area for parents and families to unwind in the sun or shade.

Aquopolis offers a wide variety of dining choices on-site, including a dedicated Burger and Pizzeria outlet, an ice-cream parlour, a sandwich bar, and a family-style cafeteria geared towards the tastes of children and hungry sun-drenched families. Visitors are welcome to take their own food and drink into the park, but no glass is permitted.

The best way to visit Aquopolis is by car with 600 free car parking spaces provided. There is no direct bus route from Orihuela Costa, and visitors relying on public transport will need to get a bus to Torrevieja's Habaneras Commercial Centre and make the short 10-minute walk to the water park on foot.

Alternatively, consider booking a taxi to get you there, with an estimated cost of around 20€ each way.

Standard ticket prices cost 35,95€ for an adult, and 29,95€ for a child from 90 – 140 cm. The Speedy Pass costs 40€ per person and reduces queuing time. Access to the Premium and Platinum VIP areas costs 290€ or 340€ for a family of four (excludes entry ticket cost).

Aquopolis Torrevieja opens daily from 11:30 until 18:00 (from 11:00 until 19:00 from 1st July to 24th August). Visitors can also save money by buying discounted tickets online at Aquopolis Torrevieja in advance.

Aquapark Rojales | Ciudad Quesada

Located 20 minutes north of Orihuela Costa by car, Aquapark Rojales in Ciudad Quesada is a highly-regarded choice for family fun in the sun. It might lack the extreme rides offered by adjacent water parks but actually, that is part of the attraction.

Originally opened in July 1986 and the second water park to be established in the Spanish territory, the park offers 21.000 metres of rides, a lawned chill-out zone, a picnic area, a beach bar, and a cafeteria offering a menu of casual finger-food designed to appeal to a younger palate.

Aquapark Rojales is perfectly suited to younger families, or families with children (or adults) with a fear of heights. The entire park is built into the side of a naturally occurring hill, so the high climb-towers needed at some other parks won't be found in Aquapark Rojales.

Staple water park rides such as the Rio Yukatán lazy river, the Amazonia adventure zone, a children's activity lake, and a large pool will entertain little ones and grown-ups alike, and free parking is provided on-site. Summer 2026 ticket prices cost 19€, with children's tickets available for 16€ (4 to 10 years). Concessionary prices are available for persons aged 65 years or older, but please note that Aquapark Rojales never offers promotional discounts or ticket giveaways. The park opens daily throughout the summer from 11:00 until 18:00.

Flamingo Aqua Park | Torrevieja

Small, but packed full of fun, Flamingo Aqua Park in Torrevieja offers an excellent alternative venue for families hoping to avoid the madding crowds of the more popular Costa Blanca water parks at the height of summer.

This local water park is often overlooked, but just like Aquapark Rojales, Flamingo Aqua Park is just perfect for younger and less demanding children who can do without high-octane thrill rides and sky-high climb-towers.

Indeed, visitors expecting the full water park experience are sure to be disappointed, but Flamingo Aqua Park follows a successful recipe of a handful of flumes, a children's activity zone, and a freeform pool for messing around in the water.

Coupled with a snack bar serving a menu of family favourites that won't give Gordon Ramsay sleepless nights, this little water park proves that all you need is sunshine and H2O to have a lot of holiday fun. You'll find the prices reassuringly tiny too, and patrons are welcome to take food (no glass or metal cutlery).

Entrance prices start from 16,20€ for children aged 4-12 with an adult ticket price of 19,20€ per day – sunbed included. Children under 4 years enter free of charge, and special concession tickets cost 16,20€ for visitors over 60 years. The park opens daily from 11:30 until 18:00.

Rio Safari Splash Park | Elche, Costa Blanca

It's hardly surprising to find Rio Safari Park on most visitors' hotlists this summer. The venue houses a variety of exotic fauna, including Jaguars, lions, Bengal Tigers and animals from the African savannah that are undeniably majestic and a wonder to see firsthand.

The adjacent Rio Safari Splash Park, incorporated into the main park, provides 4 swimming pools (2 dedicated to small children), 16 toboggan-style slides, and a host of water attractions for children and adults. The park is perfectly suited to younger children and families.

A self-service restaurant offers a menu of sandwiches, hamburgers, hot dogs, pizzas and combo plates. For those who prefer to cater for themselves, a shaded picnic area is on hand for visitors to consume food and beverages brought from home.

Rio Safari Splash Park is only accessible by car, located 40 minutes north of La Zenia in the direction of Elche. In addition to the animal experience and the water attractions, the park offers kart racing, a trampoline zone, and family-focused education and conservation activities for children.

Park admission tickets cost 22,50€ per adult and 17€ for children aged 3-12 years, with discounts for online booking. Access to the Rio Safari Splash Park costs an extra 12€ per person in addition to the main ticket price. The park opens every day from 10:00 until 18:00.

Aqua Natura Water Park | Benidorm

Part of the larger Terra Natura complex, this fully-fledged theme park experience boasts 14 epic rides, with 5 specific attractions suited to young children under 5 years old.

Around 90 minutes north of La Zenia by car, Aqua Natura offers a complete day of entertainment for guests of all ages, and thrill-seekers won't be disappointed with four high-octane water rides and slides designed to elevate the heart rate: Niágara, Speed Hole, Kamikaze, and the zero-gravity La Cresta – a 20-metre high rollercoaster slide.

Naturally, Aqua Natura's splash zones offer an animal theme, and visitors can enjoy educational demonstrations from the “Guardians of the sea”, an immersive and responsive show featuring sea lions. There is a range of leisurely cafeterias and restaurants on-site and a picnic area for visitors to consume their food.

An exclusive VIP zone provides easy front-line beach access to the swimming pool to enjoy with friends and family. The private area has both sun and shade, designed especially for those seeking a restful oasis between dips in the pool. Access costs 150€ and doesn't include the price of admission, keeping this VIP area reassuringly exclusive.

Standard adult ticket prices start at 41€, with children's tickets available from 35€ per person online. Ticket sales for admission on the day cost 5€ more per person, and combination tickets offer money-saving admission to both Terra Natura and Aqua Natura.

Parking is chargeable at 5€ per car per day, and Aqua Natura opens daily from 11:00 until 18:00. Visitors can benefit from discounted prices by booking online beforehand.

Rosa Tours offers coach trips to Aqua Natura six days a week during the summer months, with great value tickets that include return transport and admission to the water park and Terra Natura theme park. Departures from La Zenia and Orihuela Costa.

With effect from yesterday, Wednesday 22nd April 2026, British-resident pet owners can no longer travel with their animals under the EU Pet Passport scheme and must instead obtain a new Animal Health Certificate (AHC) each time they enter Spain or any other EU country.

Many regular visitors and holiday home owners in Orihuela Costa obtain a Pet Passport for their cat or dog locally in Spain to ensure economical, hassle-free travel for their animals and to avoid the expense of an AHC.

The UK left the EU Pet Passport scheme on January 1st 2021, following the end of the Brexit transition period, but the UK continues to accept EU-issued Pet Passports for inbound travel to Great Britain.

However, UK residents can no longer use any EU Pet Passport (including those issued by veterinary practices in Spain) to enter any EU country from Great Britain.

Mandatory Animal Health Certificates replace EU Pet Passports

Guidance on the GOV.UK website states “If you live in England, Scotland or Wales, you should not use a Pet Passport (even if it was issued in the EU). If you use a Pet Passport, your pet may be refused entry into the EU.”

The new rules do not apply to residents in Northern Ireland, with residents maintaining their rights under the EU Pet Passport scheme. But the rules do apply to British residents planning to travel to Northern Ireland.

A statement on Your Europe, the official website of the European Union, reads “EU Pet Passports issued to a pet owner resident in Great Britain are no longer valid for travel with pets from Great Britain to an EU country or Northern Ireland.”

Instead, UK resident pet owners must travel with an Animal Health Certificate. An AHC costs around £100 to £150, is valid for 10 days once issued, and can only be used to enter an EU country once.

Hiring a car allows visitors to make the most of the local area, leaving holidaymakers with extra time to explore the best that Orihuela Costa offers without relying on public transport.

International visitors typically arrive via the area's two main airports: Alicante-Elche airport and the Región de Murcia airport, which opened in January 2019. Both airports offer a comprehensive suite of choices for renting a car.

The newer Región de Murcia airport in Corvera is a smaller transport hub with limited car hire options, with just Goldcar/InterRent, Europcar, Firefly, and Sixt operating car rental offices within the airport complex.

Go-karting is fast gaining traction as a favourite with visiting holidaymakers. Go-karts can go much quicker than most people realise, and when you're sitting just inches from the ground, it feels even faster.

The acceleration is instant, and the kart's top speed is reached in just a matter of seconds. The sensation of speed is incredibly exhilarating, and it's one of the main reasons why go-karting attracts wannabe racing drivers of all ages.

Go-Karts Ciudad Quesada | Ciudad Quesada

One of the latest additions to the Costa Blanca go-karting motorsport venues, Go-Karts Ciudad Quesada opened in 2021 and boasts an impressive 1.300-metre track – one of the longest go-kart racing circuits in the Costa Blanca area.

The purpose-built motorsports venue offers a play park for younger children, a casual cafe serving light snacks and refreshments, and “Arroceria El Sarmiento” – an upscale restaurant specialising in traditional Spanish food, authentic wood-fired paellas, and rice dishes.

Adult prices start from 25€ per person or 32€ for the high-performance Honda 400cc racing karts. Junior go-kart prices (10 to 15 years) start at 18€, and go-karting sessions on the separate kid's track (5 to 10 years) cost 11€ per person.

Go Karts Orihuela Costa offers a multitude of activities, a bespoke championship racing track with a digital scoreboard, and racing karts and quad-bikes in various riding styles and levels of performance.

The venue offers a Go-Fly vertical wind tunnel, a children's play zone with bouncy castles, quad-bike excursions (adults only, valid driving licence required), and a cafeteria serving family-friendly food with a full bar.

Go-Karts San Fulgencio | Guardamar del Segura

Located 27 km south of Alicante airport at the Gilesias Karting Racing Center, Go-karts San Fulgencio sports a twisting 500m asphalt track, a refreshments bar with a covered chill-out zone, and a fleet of go-karts including the fastest, most powerful go-karts in our part of Spain.

The venue is directly adjacent to the N-332 main coast road, just 20 minutes north of Orihuela Costa. The circuit is one of the most established in the South Costa Blanca region, originally opening in 1989.

Adult prices start from 24€ per person or 29€ for the high-performance karts (minimum 18 years old). Ultra-performance 2-stroke 25 hp racing karts are available from 39€, and junior go-kart prices (minimum 13 years old) start from 18€.

Go-Karts Mar Menor | San Javier

Just 20 minutes south of Orihuela Costa, Go-Karts Mar Menor offers a 1.100m championship track, a giant video scoreboard, and a restaurant and bar with a covered terrace that overlooks the racing circuit.

The family-friendly outdoor go-kart track permits the use of the circuit by all ages, with children as young as 6 years allowed to use the same championship track in sessions separated from adult drivers. Double go-karts are available for a parent and child to race together.

Adult prices start from 19€ per person or 30€ for the high-performance Subaru 400cc 17 hp competition racing karts. Junior go-kart prices (minimum age 12) start from 14€, and low-powered children's go-karts (minimum age 6 years) cost 10€ per child.

You'll find the locals buying fresh regional produce to create meals at home for the forthcoming week, often stopping for a bite to eat and a drink at one of the market's laid-back café bars. They are well worth a visit during your time here, with visitors met by the beautiful colours of the clothes and the fresh smell of the fruit, vegetables and herbs on sale.

The local markets typically take place from 09:00 and finish at around 13:30. Although sometimes you will find the odd afternoon market, which starts from 16:00 until about 20:00. At the larger markets, car parks are provided free of charge, and there are normally attendants present to help you find an available space during busy periods.

The markets sell everything you might need. The fruit and vegetable stalls are run by local farmers, ensuring the quality and freshness of the locally grown Valencian produce. You will always find a bargain on these stalls, especially if you buy seasonal fruit and vegetables.

Depending on the season, 2 kg of strawberries can cost as little as €5. The same money can buy 6 kg of oranges at other times of the year.

You will find stalls selling Spanish cheese, Chorizo and Iberian hams. They are definitely worth a try to discover that authentic Mediterranean flavour in your food.

Alongside these stalls, others will sell seasonal herbs, olives, and fresh bread; the aroma will positively entice you.

As you wander around the local markets you will hear the bartering between the stallholders and their customers offering a good discount on the advertised price, and it's all part of the experience.

And of course, there is more than just food on offer. You will find locally made Valencian leather goods such as handbags, belts and high-quality footwear. The smell of tannin hangs in the air, and the quality and price of the handmade goods are virtually unbeatable, with a small Spanish-made leather clutch or handbag available for approximately €10.

Spanish-manufactured shoes are a veritable bargain with prices from €15, and you'll always get the best advice for sizing to suit your particular requirements (Spanish sizes might be a little different than you're used to).

All Orihuela Costa street markets feature lots of stalls offering the spectrum of Spanish kitchenware, cooking pans and pots, seasonal plants such as herbs and chillies, and freshly cut bouquets of flowers.

Fashion features at each market too, and the clothes stalls are always worth a look as the fabrics are locally sourced and perfect for the hot weather that the Orihuela Costa experiences in the height of summer. Take a close look at the labels and you might be lucky enough to pick up a beautiful Spanish-made dress for as little as €15.

But the Orihuela Costa street markets would be incomplete without the traditional Spanish handmade lace goods the area is renowned for. Thankfully, you'll find plenty of shawls, tablecloths and many other beautifully produced clothing and homewares.

The delicate designs are eye-catching and of amazing quality, and they make perfect gifts to take back home for family or friends.

One of the quirky things about taxis in the Costa Blanca is how they are permitted to operate. Licenced taxis are only allowed to pick up passengers in their licenced area. So if you travel from Orihuela Costa to Torrevieja for example, the taxi that takes you to Torrevieja cannot return to collect you for your homeward journey.

Instead, you'll need to book a separate local taxi for your return journey beforehand or call one when you're ready to head home, that's licenced to operate in Torrevieja.

It's the same for all areas of the Costa Blanca. If you're planning a special night out or a meal in a beautiful restaurant in Ciudad Quesada, any licenced Orihuela Costa taxi can take you to your destination, but only a locally booked taxi company in Ciudad Quesada can take you home.

You'll find taxi ranks in Torrevieja in popular locations throughout the city, such as the Town Hall, the bus station, Habaneras shopping centre, the local police station, health centres and the hospital.

Most local taxis accept bookings by WhatsApp (ideal if you don't possess fluent Spanish language skills), and phone numbers that begin with a “6” are mobile. You might need to add the country code +34 to your number before calling. You can also book via Messenger, or email if the taxi company has a website, by following the links above.

Licenced taxis accept credit and debit card payments, tips are optional (but politely recommended), and most drivers will speak your language – certainly enough to get you to your destination.

Remember to check that you're getting into a legal taxi. Licenced taxis are easy to spot, with a “Taxi” light mounted on the roof, a blue number plate at the rear of the vehicle, and the coat of arms and licence number on the front doors.
