They are just two of the eleven majestic coves and beaches of the Orihuela Costa area, and together they stretch, meander and curve around 16 km of magnificent Mediterranean coastline.

Playa Flamenca's Cala Estaca beach is the larger of those two beaches, measuring a hefty 175m along the water's edge, with 7.350 m2 of sand to lure in eager beachgoers. Just like other beaches in the area, the beach adopts a shallow cove shape, flanked on either side by a volcanic rocky outcrop.

The popular cove is formed of fine golden sand, with safe, relatively shallow bathing waters that provide a safe environment for adults and children alike. The beach is accredited with the iconic Blue Flag award for its superior quality.

Cala Estaca enjoys a south-facing orientation with sunshine guaranteed all day for the vast majority of the year. The headland adjacent to the southern edge of the beach features a footpath that leads to neighbouring Cala Cerrada beach in La Zenia, just literally around the corner and a 7-10 minute walk away.

But unlike Cala Cerrada, Cala Estaca beach offers easy access for all, with the fine sands accessed from a gentle slope to the north or a small elevated bridge to the south of the beach. It's ideally suited to persons of limited mobility or families with push-chairs and younger children.

The bridge crosses the “Rambla de las Estacas”, a ravine that runs directly to the sea from inland locations such as Villamartin Golf course. During heavy rain, the ravine collects the water run-off from adjacent land and acts as a natural conduit, taking the rainwater to the Mediterranean Sea.

Fortunately, the weather in Playa Flamenca is comparatively dry, and the ravine remains arid for most of the year, filling with water only on occasion during the spring and late autumn months.

During the summer, Orihuela Town Hall provides a lifeguard service that operates throughout the high season. Sunseekers will also find lifeguards stationed on Cala Estaca beach at other selected popular times, such as the Easter holidays.

Playa Flamenca also benefits from an impressive promenade that separates the two beaches. Offering a small children's play park, public seating, and a functional ornate sundial, Playa Flamenca's plaza is punctuated with mature Mexican fan palm trees that produce a spectacular seaward vista.

A small parade of commercial units facing the promenade offers additional local facilities, hosting a café, a bistro, local shops, and restaurants, including the locally renowned Lobster Restaurant that serves freshly cooked seafood and speciality dishes daily.

Also noteworthy is the exceptionally popular Surfer's Bar. The restaurant has made a name for itself by providing high-quality, beautifully presented homemade food, with an extensive menu crafted to appeal to all palates – and prices that are acceptable to all pockets.

Both venues offer beautiful palm tree-lined views over the promenade and toward the Mediterranean Sea – spectacular locations to enjoy a lunch or dinner with family or friends after a relaxing day on the beach.

You can find plentiful on-street parking along Calle de las Orquideas and adjacent streets. A small car park and on-street parking in Calle Violetas provide additional parking spaces.

The event aims to unite families, adults of all generations, and young people, to participate in a fun and energetic event, and show their support for the work of the Spanish Red Cross.

Experienced local yoga instructors will volunteer their time, and offer continuous yoga sessions for six consecutive hours.

Open to everyone, regardless of age or fitness level, visitors can participate in any (or all) of the sessions by making a donation in the collection boxes set up by the Spanish Red Cross on the Flamenca Beach esplanade.

These donations will help support projects aimed at combating loneliness within the community.

The charity Yoga Marathon will combine sport, emotional well-being, and solidarity, and the Spanish Red Cross will set up an information stand on Playa Flamenca's esplanade where volunteers will encourage participation and collect donations.

In addition, the organisation will have blood pressure checks available for visitors who need them, and will offer advice and recommendations on health and emotional well-being.

The Spanish Red Cross is part of the world's largest humanitarian movement. It collaborates with public and private entities to ensure that aid reaches everyone who needs it, wherever and whenever they need it.

The venue offers a multitude of activities, a bespoke racing track, and racing karts and quad-bikes in a variety of riding styles and levels of performance.

A dedicated junior track offers children up to the age of 10 years a safe racing experience under the supervision of a motorsport marshal, whilst a full-size championship track offers adults the high-octane thrills of karting.

Children aged 10 years or over are welcome to participate in races held on the championship track, and adults can choose from standard 270 cc karts, a double kart that accommodates the driver and a copilot, or a high-performance Honda 400 cc racing kart.

The championship racing track is a twisting network of asphalt with high-speed straights and tightly spiralled hairpins with a capacity for up to 26 drivers at any one time, complemented by a digital scoreboard and viewing bridge.

The venue organises off-site quad routes throughout the season. Typically lasting in excess of two hours, these routes allow riders to explore some of the most beautiful natural areas around the Orihuela Costa by quad.

Go Karts Orihuela Costa is a family-friendly leisure environment, complete with a children's play area to ensure that little ones are exceptionally well catered for.

The El Sarmiento Arroceria restaurant and dedicated bar provide refreshments with a menu of light snacks, and an array of authentic wood-fired Spanish paella, and the venue specialises in private hire for birthdays and family celebrations with fixed costs per person.

We've compiled the latest data from the leading weather websites to bring you an overview of what you can expect if you're living in Playa Flamenca, or planning a visit to our part of Spain in March.

We're just a couple of days into March, and the difference is certainly very noticeable this year, with the Orihuela Costa already experiencing spring-like conditions, sunshine, and temperatures exceeding the monthly average both day and night.

The onset of spring can signal the possibility of additional rainfall, and after an unusually dry and mild February, any rain would be welcomed. Nonetheless, annual averages suggest March will bring just 3 days of rain.

On the bright side, days are now a full hour longer than they were just a month ago, with earlier sunrises and the sun setting past 19:00 toward the middle of March. The average Spanish day is still a good hour longer than at more distant northern latitudes.

There's more good news when it comes to sunshine too, with an average of 7 hours of warm sunny weather per day. And as average daytime temperatures creep past 18°c, there are greater chances of “real feel” temperatures exceeding a very pleasant 25°c each day.

Of course, you will still need a light jacket if you want to enjoy evenings out at local bars, bistros and restaurants, but temperate and dry daytime conditions still make the Orihuela Costa an excellent choice of winter sun destination.

Following the success of previous year's events, the area will host a third annual carnival that aims to celebrate the diverse cultures and the spirit of togetherness that characterises this beautiful part of Spain.

Hot on the heels of Torrevieja's carnival parades and scheduled to take place in the heart of Orihuela Costa, this family-friendly event is designed to offer something for everyone, from the youngest members of the family to the young at heart.

The festivities will offer live music performances, creating a lively and inviting atmosphere and ensuring that every attendee finds their rhythm. Additionally, DJs will spin a mix of tracks that will keep the energy high.

A wholly family-friendly event, the organisers have gone to great lengths to ensure that children are catered for, and bouncy castles will provide a safe and fun outlet for kids to expend their excess energy.

The highlight of the carnival is undoubtedly the spectacular parade. Featuring vibrant and colourful dancers in elaborate costumes, the parade promises to be a feast for the senses.

Participants and dancing troupes involved in the parade have been rehearsing for months, preparing routines that celebrate the local culture and the diversity of influences that have shaped Orihuela Costa.

This second edition of the Orihuela Costa Carnival results from a collaborative effort by local businesses, cultural organisations, and the municipality.

Organised by the Comisión de Fiestas Orihuela Costa in association with the Town Hall of Orihuela and the Asociación Costa Orihuela Cultural, the event is supported by a large number of businesses.

The 2026 Orihuela Costa Carnival takes place on Saturday 28th February, with food, drinks, and music from 12:00 midday. The main parade starts at 17:00 and proceeds from the roundabout at Calle Nicolás de Bussi and Calle Pintor Ribera, in the direction of CEIP Los Dolses school.

Previously, dog owners had been deprived of legally enjoying the open natural beaches with their pets, often risking a fine to provide the open-air space and essential exercise their loyal companions required.

Domestic animals are not permitted on any beach in the Orihuela Costa area, and many owners used to avoid the beaches entirely or walk their dogs along the coastline early morning and only during the winter.

But three years ago, Orihuela Town Hall signed an order designating the natural cove of Cabo Peñas in Alameda del Mar as the official dog beach for the municipal Orihuela area.

Cabo Peñas is a small cove-shaped beach located barely 100 metres north of Cala Mosca beach in Playa Flamenca. Measuring 112 metres at the waterline and 35 metres wide, the rural beach offers unspoilt fine sand and safe water for “doggie-paddle”.

Flanked on either side and to the rear by a relatively low sandstone cliff, the beach is accessed over natural terrain. Whilst not as immediately accessible as many other beaches in the area, the isolated nature of Cabo Peñas is undoubtedly part of its charm.

Often referred to locally as “Cala Mosca II”, the dog beach offers plenty of space for man's (and woman's) best friend to enjoy the surf, feel the sand under their paws, and enjoy free-running in the surf off-lead and spending time with their owner.

Cabo Peñas doesn't offer on-location facilities, but the beach is cared for by the council, and waste bins are provided to dispose of refuse before visitors leave the cove.

Are dogs allowed on the beaches of Orihuela Costa?

The nearby esplanade at Playa Flamenca offers a host of year-round bars, cafes, and restaurants, in addition to plentiful car parking free of charge – all within easy walking distance.

The designated dog beach is the finest in the South Costa Blanca area. An almost essential luxury in the height of summer, the beach has proven an attractive facility for existing residents and future property owners considering a move to this part of Costa Blanca.

All well-behaved dogs are welcome, but please abide by the instructions on the beach display board. The beach is a natural environment, so please leave it clean and use it respectfully.

What are the ages for school in Spain?

Education in Spain is compulsory between ages the ages of 6 and 16 years. There isn't a minimum age for starting school voluntarily, and many parents choose to enrol their children in a preschool education centre.

State education is free for all children aged 6 to 16 years. Infant Education between the ages of 3 and 6 years is provided free of charge in the Valencian Community.

The Blue Flag accredited beaches in Playa Flamenca of Cala las Estacas and Cala Mosca offer pure white sands and a cove-shaped structure that offers bathers calm and safe swimming waters.

Both beaches are exceptionally popular throughout the year and undeniably striking, separated by a grand promenade built across an area of naturally weathered exposed ancient volcanic rock, and peppered with Mexican fan palm trees.

For most visitors to this part of the Orihuela Costa, that´s where the beach experience ends. But for local residents, knowledgeable visitors, and those of us who choose to spend our time poring over Google Maps, there is a third beach at Playa Flamenca – hidden off the beaten track.

Cala Cabo Peñas, the hidden beach of Playa Flamenca

And hidden Cala Cabo Peñas certainly is. There is no path to the beach, no well-worn track, and no signage to indicate its presence, but this natural beauty spot lies just 90 metres northeast of Cala Mosca separated from view by the undulating terrain of a heavily bouldered hill.

With a crescent-shaped beachfront measuring just shy of 100 metres at the waterline, Cala Cabo Peñas is some 10 metres longer than Cala Mosca but not as deep or large in terms of surface area.

Flanked on three sides by a rocky outcrop, the rear elevation overhangs the beach whilst the land slopes down to the white sandy beach on either side close to the shoreline.

Largely unadopted by Orihuela Town Hall except for the provision of several refuse collection points, the beach is unspoilt, secluded, and natural. You won't find bathroom facilities here, nor will you find a chiringuito – the popular beach bars that provide refreshments to Orihuela Costa's other beaches.

Unlike neighbouring beaches, Cala Cabo Peñas is bereft of lifeguard service, even at the height of the summer months, but it provides a popular alternative to the more prominent beaches during peak season.

But Cala Mosca isn't the smallest beach. That accolade goes to Playa de Punta Prima beach to the north of Playa Flamenca, and Cala Mosca offers more surface area with 6,821 square metres of idyllic golden sands.

The diminutive size doesn't detract from the popularity of the beach, and Cala Mosca has plenty of plus points to offer the tens of thousands of visitors who come to enjoy the sand, the sun, and the sea every summer.

Indeed, the beach is revered for its perfect shape – a deep triangle of sand protected on both sides by a rocky headland that assures safe and calm bathing waters throughout the seasons.

Playa de Cala Mosca is surrounded on three sides by a wide paved pathway that wraps around the rear of the beach, and two shallow ramps offer easy access for everyone, including families with children or people with mobility issues.

Cala Mosca is one of two adopted beaches in Playa Flamenca and the larger Cala Estaca beach can be found further south along the shoreline, adjacent to the Mediterranean promenade.

However, visitors prepared to venture “off-piste” will find a third beach located 100 metres to the north. A well-worn dusty path leads to Cala de Cabo Peñas, a natural and secluded sandy beach unadopted by the Town Hall.

The local government signed an order designating the natural cove as the official dog beach for the municipal Orihuela Costa area in May 2021. Today, residents and visitors can enjoy the beach with their pets without restrictions.

Further north, the path follows the coast toward Punta Prima 1.2 km away. The brisk 10-15 minute walk passes two more shallow sandy bays and some beautifully rugged coastline. The topography remains flat throughout.

A lifeguard service operates on Cala Mosca beach during high season, but the chiringuito beach bar which provides refreshments and light bites on the beach isn't currently scheduled to serve the 2025 season.

The beautiful promenade along the beach's southern fringe hosts the Playa Flamenca commercial centre, with a selection of local shops, café bars, and upscale restaurants offering beautiful views over the beaches and sea.

The history of the promenade dates back to 1972 when a group of Dutch investors saw the potential of what was then little more than a rocky outcrop of undeveloped scrubland. They transformed the area into the popular and thriving Mediterranean holiday and leisure destination we see today.

Just like Orihuela Costa's other beaches, Playa de Cala Mosca is Blue Flag accredited for the outstanding condition of the beach, infrastructure and maintenance, and consistently high standards of water quality.

Plentiful free on-road parking is available around the promenade itself, and further free parking can be found along Calle Los Claveles and other streets within the one-way system.
