Things to do: popular Orihuela Costa Tourist Train returns for summer

THE ORIHUELA COSTA TOURIST TRAIN rumbled its way onto the streets way back in 2018, proving an immediate hit upon its introduction.

But after an unexpected hiatus last year due to the ongoing global pandemic, the popular train is back this summer a little later than scheduled to provide an innovative and enjoyable way to experience the locale.

The local attraction was initially launched by Orihuela Town Hall in association with the established Valencian passenger transport company, Bus Sigüenza, in June 2018.

Billed as the “best way to discover Orihuela Costa”, the road train provides a unique travel experience in addition to a practical way of getting around the coastal region.

The Orihuela Costa tourist train returned for the 2019 season, operating two road-going locomotives, with each train pulling a carriage with covered seating providing shade and an increase in seating capacity.

The service operated two routes, with one train starting out from Campoamor and servicing points of interest eastward along the Orihuela Costa coastline, and another train running return services from Playa Flamenca and travelling in a westerly direction.

For this year, the Orihuela Costa tourist train will operate a reduced service for the month of August only, but in a change to previous years, the trains will operate entirely free of charge.

The trains (or “Orihuela Tren Turístico”), will run local transport services along the coastline, offering a super-fun way to see the sights and experience the sounds of the region.

Popular scheduled stops include Playa Flamenca beach (Cala Mosca), La Zenia beach (Cala Bosque), and the beaches of Campoamor (Playa de la Glea).

With a comparatively short travel time, the Orihuela Costa tourist train provides a great way of exploring the local area even in the height of summer, as the movement of the vehicle provides a cooling Mediterranean Sea breeze even on the stillest of days.

A press release on the official Orihuela town hall website reads “During the month of August, all tourists and residents on the Orihuela Costa will be able to enjoy the tourist train “Playas de Orihuela” that the Tourism Department of the Orihuela City Council, led by Mariola Rocamora, has put into operation completely free of charge.”

“The train will connect the urbanisations of La Regia, Cabo Roig and La Zenia, which will allow you to visit the beaches of Cala Bosque, Cala Mosca and Playa de la Glea.”

“It is a fun way for the little ones and visitors to get around together with the possibility of getting to know our beaches. In addition, it will facilitate greater mobility for residents of all ages.”
